Level 1 (like Grade 1) · Unit 2 of 24
Notes in the treble clef
Name and write every note on the treble staff, with memory aids to help.
By the end you will be able to:
- name the notes on the lines and in the spaces of the treble staff
- write a note named on the treble staff
Learn
The lines: E G B D F
From the bottom, the treble clef lines are E, G, B, D and F. Many people remember them with a sentence: “Every Good Boy Does Fine”. Make up your own if you like – the sillier, the easier to remember.
The spaces: F A C E
The four spaces, from the bottom, spell a word: FACE. “In the space, FACE.”
Landmark notes
Memory aids are a start, but good readers jump straight to a few landmark notes and count from there: middle C (one ledger line below), G (the line the clef curls round) and top F (the top line). A note just above or below a landmark is the next letter up or down: the music alphabet is A B C D E F G, then it starts again at A.
Your turn
Watch and listen, then practice with new questions every time – reading questions, and writing tasks you answer on the staff. Take the check when you are ready: 80% passes the unit.
