Level 1 (like Grade 1) · Unit 3 of 24
Notes in the bass clef
Name and write the notes on the bass staff – the lower notes of the piano and many instruments.
By the end you will be able to:
- name the notes on the lines and in the spaces of the bass staff
- write a note named on the bass staff
Learn
The lines: G B D F A
From the bottom, the bass clef lines are G, B, D, F and A: “Good Boys Deserve Fudge Always”.
The spaces: A C E G
The spaces, from the bottom, are A, C, E and G: “All Cows Eat Grass”.
Bass clef landmarks
The two dots of the bass clef sit either side of line 4, which is F – that is why it is called the F clef. Middle C is one ledger line above the staff. A handy check: a bass clef note is two letters higher than the treble clef note in the same place (the bottom line is E in treble but G in bass).
Your turn
Watch and listen, then practice with new questions every time – reading questions, and writing tasks you answer on the staff. Take the check when you are ready: 80% passes the unit.
