What it does
The page sorts the site’s 2,273 common four-letter words by first letter. Each letter shows a selection of at most 40 high-frequency words rather than the entire set, with a point value next to each. JAZZ is the highest scorer at 29 points.
Four letters is where phonics patterns multiply. Words like frog, step and milk add a consonant blend; ship, chin and that feature digraphs, where two letters spell one sound; and cake, bike and home follow the CVCe pattern, where a silent e makes the vowel say its name. Finding these patterns in a real word list shows students that English spelling has dependable rules, along with a few exceptions.

How to use it
- Open the list in a new tab.
- Pick a letter heading to see its selection of common four-letter words, each with a point value.
- Scan a group for a target pattern, such as words with “sh” or a silent e at the end.
- For four-letter words built from particular letters, open the unscrambler and pick an exact length of 4 in its More options panel.
More tips
- Pair CVC words with their CVCe partners (hop/hope, kit/kite, cut/cute) so students hear the vowel change.
- Four-letter word ladders are a classic: try turning cold into warm one letter at a time.
- Color-code a printed group: highlight blends in one color, digraphs in another and silent e words in a third, then count which pattern is most common.
Ideas for the classroom and homeschool
- Grades K–1Do a pattern hunt: give partners one letter group and have them list every word with a digraph (sh, ch, th) and every word ending in e.
- Grades 1–2Play “silent e” switch: students read a CVC word, add an e card, and read the new word aloud, checking both in the lists.
- Grades 3–5Assign a word ladder such as cold to warm or head to tail. Students verify each rung is a real word and compare the fewest steps used.
- Grades 2–4Pick 12 four-letter words for a quick puzzle made with the word search maker as a calm spelling center activity.
