3-Letter Words
Three-letter words are where most kids start blending sounds into words. The word site lists 580 common ones, organized by first letter, making it a ready resource for phonics, word families and early spelling games.

What it does
All 580 words in the site’s common three-letter list appear under alphabetical headings, with a count for each letter and a point value after every word. At the top of the scoring is FEZ, worth 15.
For K–2 teachers, the big win is the large number of consonant–vowel–consonant (CVC) words: cat, dog, big, sun, hop, red, wet. These follow the simplest spelling pattern, so they’re ideal for blending and segmenting practice. The list also includes words that don’t follow the pattern, such as the, you, was and two, which make good examples of “heart words” or sight words students learn by memory.

How to use it
- Open the list in a new tab.
- Go to any letter heading to see every common three-letter word starting with that letter and how many there are.
- Use the point values if you’re playing a tile game or designing a math challenge.
- To find three-letter words from specific letters, open the unscrambler and pick an exact length of 3 in its More options panel.
More tips
- Sort CVC words by their middle vowel (bat, bed, bit, bog, bug) to practice one short vowel sound at a time.
- Three-letter words make the easiest word ladders: change one letter at a time to turn cat into dog.
- Mix in a few words that break the pattern (the, was, you) so students practice spotting which words can’t be sounded out.
Ideas for the classroom and homeschool
- Grades K–1Use CVC words for “stretch and blend”: say each sound slowly (c-a-t) and have students push the sounds together into a word, then let them lead.
- Grades K–2Build word families. Pick an ending like -at or -ig, have students find every rhyming word in the list, then write a silly sentence using three of them.
- Grades 2–3Run a word ladder challenge: go from hot to dog or pig to sty, changing one letter per step and checking each word against the list. The word ladder tool can reveal a solution afterward.
- Grades 3–5Use point values for a quick math warm-up: which B word scores highest? Can students find two words with equal totals?
