10-Letter Words
Ten-letter words look intimidating, but most are assembled from smaller, predictable pieces. The word site’s list of 7,505 common examples is ideal for teaching students to break big words apart.

What it does
Words are grouped by first letter, with a selection of at most 40 high-frequency ten-letter words for each letter, plus a point value for every word. EMBEZZLING has the highest score, 33 points.
Long words reward a word-parts approach. Plenty on this list contain Greek or Latin roots that appear across subjects: atmosphere (atmos + sphere), automobile (auto + mobile), biological and zoological (both using -logical, from the Greek for study). Others combine a root with affixes, like accumulate and accelerate, which share a tricky double c. You’ll also find compound words (background, blackboard, afterwards, kingfisher) and both kilometers and kilometres, so the list supports roots-and-affixes instruction, syllable chunking and spelling-variant talks.

How to use it
- Open the list in a new tab.
- Pick a letter heading and browse its common ten-letter words and point values.
- Gather words that share a root, prefix or suffix into a themed set.
- To see which ten-letter words a set of letters makes, open the unscrambler and pick an exact length of 10 in its More options panel.
More tips
- Underline meaningful parts, like bio- (life) or -logy (study), so spelling and meaning reinforce each other.
- Doubled letters cause most errors in long words; flag them in words like accomplish, accumulate and appreciate.
- Have students keep a “word parts” notebook: each new root or affix they meet gets one example from this list.
Ideas for the classroom and homeschool
- Grades 4–5Feature a weekly “big word” from the list. Students divide it into syllables, find a smaller word hiding inside, and use it in a sentence.
- Grades 6–8Create a Greek and Latin roots wall for science: collect words with bio-, geo-, -logy or -sphere and add a meaning card for each part.
- Grades 6–8Try hangman’s “Computer guesses” mode with a ten-letter word from the list. Students must mark every letter correctly and see how few guesses the computer needs.
- Grades 9–12Give a challenge spelling list of ten words sharing a tricky feature (double letters, silent letters) and have students explain the pattern before studying them, a good fit for SAT-style vocabulary review.
