What it does
Each letter group shows a selection of at most 40 high-frequency nine-letter words, each with a point value. QUIZZICAL earns the top score of 38.
The list supports three kinds of lessons. First, morphology: many words are a base plus a suffix, like agreement, attention, abilities and available, so students can see how -ment, -tion and -able build longer words. Second, spelling variants: the A group lists both apologize and apologise, and the B group has behaviour, which opens a discussion about why American English uses -ize and drops the u while British English often keeps both. Third, puzzles: a scrambled nine-letter word is a satisfying brain teaser, and the word site’s letters and numbers game has a whole round built around one.

How to use it

More tips
- Before a scramble challenge, look for common endings (-ing, -ment, -tion) hiding in the letters.
- Point out British forms on the list so students don’t copy them into US-spelling assignments.
- Let students build their own scrambles from the list for classmates, which doubles as careful spelling practice.
Ideas for the classroom and homeschool
- Grades 3–5Post one scrambled nine-letter word from the list as a morning bell-ringer. Students solve it before attendance is done and share the clue that helped (an ending, a double letter).
- Grades 3–5Suffix sort: give groups 20 words from one letter and have them sort by ending (-ment, -tion, -ing, other) and write the base word next to each.
- Grades 6–8Study American vs. British spelling: compare apologize/apologise and behavior/behaviour, hunt for more pairs on other lists, and connect it to Noah Webster’s spelling reforms.
- Grades 6–8Play the conundrum rounds in the word site’s letters and numbers game on the 60-second setting and keep a class leaderboard for the grading period.
