The standards (our summaries)

Wyoming's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Mathematical Practices (MP)

  • 6.MP.1 Solve ratio and rate problems, explain methods and check results.
  • 6.MP.2 Use numbers and variables to model real contexts.
  • 6.MP.3 Make conjectures, justify thinking and evaluate one's own and others' reasoning.
  • 6.MP.4 Show work with diagrams and tables, map relationships and interpret results.
  • 6.MP.5 Choose suitable tools and representations, from concrete models to technology.
  • 6.MP.6 Communicate clearly, define variables and label units and axes accurately.
  • 6.MP.7 Spot patterns and structure, e.g. in ratio tables and equivalent expressions.
  • 6.MP.8 Generalize from repeated work, check reasonableness and verify patterns.

Ratios and Proportional Relationships (RP)

  • 6.RP.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real and mathematical problems.
    • 6.RP.3a Build tables of equivalent ratios, find missing values, graph pairs and compare ratios.
    • 6.RP.3b Solve unit-rate problems, including unit pricing and constant speed.
    • 6.RP.3c Treat percent as a rate per 100 to solve part, whole and percent problems.
    • 6.RP.3d Convert measurement units using ratio reasoning.

The Number System (NS)

  • 6.NS.1 Divide fractions by fractions using visual models and equations.
  • 6.NS.3 Add, subtract, multiply and divide multi-digit decimals with efficient methods.
  • 6.NS.7 Understand the order and absolute value of rational numbers.
    • 6.NS.7a Read inequalities as relative positions on a number line.
    • 6.NS.7b Write and explain order statements for rational numbers in context.
    • 6.NS.7c Treat absolute value as distance from zero and as size in context.
    • 6.NS.7d Tell comparisons of absolute value apart from comparisons of order.
  • 6.NS.8 Graph points in all four quadrants and find distances between points sharing a coordinate.

Expressions and Equations (EE)

  • 6.EE.2 Write, read and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
    • 6.EE.2a Write expressions that record operations with numbers and letters.
    • 6.EE.2b Name the parts of an expression such as sum, term, factor, coefficient and constant.
    • 6.EE.2c Evaluate expressions using order of operations, including formulas.
  • 6.EE.3 Use properties of operations to make equivalent expressions.
  • 6.EE.6 Use variables for unknowns and write expressions for problems.
  • 6.EE.7 Write and solve one-step linear equations with nonnegative rational numbers.
  • 6.EE.8 Write inequalities x > c or x < c and graph their solutions.

Geometry (G)

  • 6.G.1 Find areas of triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons by combining or splitting shapes.
  • 6.G.4 Use nets of 3D figures to find surface area.

Statistics and Probability (SP)

  • 6.SP.4 Show numerical data on number lines: dot plots, stem-and-leaf plots, histograms and box plots.
  • 6.SP.5 Summarize numerical data in its real context.
    • 6.SP.5a Report the number of observations.
    • 6.SP.5b Describe the context, how data were measured and the units.
    • 6.SP.5c Find measures of center and spread and describe overall patterns.
    • 6.SP.5d Justify the choice of center measure from the shape of the data and the context.
