The standards (our summaries)

West Virginia's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Counting and Cardinality – Number names and the counting sequence

  • M.K.1 Count to 100 by ones and by tens.
  • M.K.2 Count forward starting from any given number instead of always from 1.
  • M.K.3 Write numerals 0 to 20 and match a numeral to a quantity, with 0 meaning no objects.

Counting and Cardinality – Count to tell how many

  • M.K.4 Connect counting to how many objects there are.
    • a. Say one number name for each object, pairing each object with one name.
    • b. Know that the last number said tells the total, whatever the arrangement or counting order.
    • c. Know that each next number name means a quantity one larger.
  • M.K.5 Answer "how many?" for up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle or up to 10 scattered; count out a given number.

Counting and Cardinality – Compare numbers

  • M.K.6 Tell whether one group has more, fewer or the same number as another by matching or counting.
  • M.K.7 Compare and order two written numerals from 0 to 20.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Addition as putting together; subtraction as taking apart

  • M.K.8 Show addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, drawings, sounds, acting out, words or equations.
  • M.K.9 Solve addition and subtraction word problems and add and subtract within 10 using objects or drawings.
  • M.K.10 Break numbers up to 10 into pairs in more than one way and record each one.
  • M.K.11 For any number 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 with it and record it with a drawing or equation.
  • M.K.12 Add and subtract within 5 quickly and accurately using a range of strategies.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Patterns

  • M.K.13 With support, make and recognize patterns using colors, shapes, sizes and sounds.

Number and Operations in Base Ten – Numbers 11–19 as a foundation for place value

  • M.K.14 Compose and decompose 11 to 19 into ten ones and some more ones, recording with drawings or equations.

Measurement and Data – Describe and compare measurable attributes

  • M.K.15 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight, including several attributes of one object.
  • M.K.16 Compare two objects directly by a shared attribute and say which has more or less of it.

Measurement and Data – Sort and count objects by category

  • M.K.17 Sort objects into categories, count each category (up to 10) and order the categories by count.

Measurement and Data – Money

  • M.K.18 Identify a penny, nickel, dime and quarter.
  • M.K.19 Count pennies up to 20.

Geometry – Identify and describe shapes

  • M.K.20 Describe objects with shape names and position words such as above, below, beside and behind.
  • M.K.21 Name shapes correctly whatever their orientation or size.
  • M.K.22 Sort real objects into two-dimensional (flat) and three-dimensional (solid).

Geometry – Analyze, compare, create and compose shapes

  • M.K.23 Compare 2-D and 3-D shapes of different sizes and orientations, describing their parts and attributes informally.
  • M.K.24 Model shapes in the world by building them from parts and by drawing them.
  • M.K.25 Combine simple shapes to make larger shapes.
