The standards (our summaries)

West Virginia's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Addition and subtraction problems

  • M.1.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems with the unknown in any position.
  • M.1.2 Solve word problems that add three whole numbers with a total of 20 or less.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Properties of operations; how addition and subtraction relate

  • M.1.3 Use properties such as changing the order or grouping of addends as strategies (formal names not needed).
  • M.1.4 Understand subtraction as finding an unknown addend.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Add and subtract within 20

  • M.1.5 Relate counting on and counting back to addition and subtraction.
  • M.1.6 Add and subtract within 20 fluently with strategies such as making ten and counting on.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Addition and subtraction equations

  • M.1.7 Understand the equal sign and decide whether addition and subtraction equations are true or false.
  • M.1.8 Find the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three numbers.

Number and Operations in Base Ten – Extend the counting sequence

  • M.1.9 Count to 120, read and write numerals in that range, and skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s.

Number and Operations in Base Ten – Place value

  • M.1.10 Understand the two digits of a two-digit number as tens and ones.
    • a. Know that ten ones make one ten (for example, ten pennies make a dime).
    • b. Know that 11 to 19 are one ten and some ones.
    • c. Know that 10, 20 … 90 are some tens and no ones.
  • M.1.11 Compare and order two-digit numbers by their tens and ones and record with >, = and <.

Number and Operations in Base Ten – Place value and properties to add and subtract

  • M.1.12 Add within 100 using models or place value strategies and explain the reasoning.
  • M.1.13 Find 10 more or 10 less than a two-digit number mentally and explain how.
  • M.1.14 Subtract multiples of 10 from multiples of 10 (10 to 90) and explain the reasoning.

Measurement and Data – Measure length indirectly and with repeated units

  • M.1.15 Order three objects by length and compare two lengths indirectly using a third object.
  • M.1.16 Give an object's length as a whole number of same-size units placed end to end.

Measurement and Data – Time and money

  • M.1.17 Tell and write time to the hour and half hour on analog and digital clocks.
  • M.1.18 Know the values of coins and use dimes and pennies to model money and place value.

Measurement and Data – Represent and interpret data

  • M.1.19 Organize, show and interpret data with up to three categories and answer questions about totals and differences.

Geometry – Shapes and their attributes

  • M.1.20 Tell defining attributes of shapes from non-defining ones; build and draw shapes with given defining attributes.
  • M.1.21 Put 2-D or 3-D shapes together into composite shapes and build new shapes from them.
  • M.1.22 Split circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares and describe them as halves and fourths.
  • M.1.23 Make a recognizable pattern that follows a given rule using colors, shapes, sizes or sounds.
