The standards (our summaries)
West Virginia's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Use the four operations to solve problems
- M.4.1 Interpret multiplication equations as comparisons and write verbal multiplicative comparisons as equations.
- M.4.2 Multiply or divide to solve multiplicative comparison problems and tell them apart from additive comparisons.
- M.4.3 Solve multistep whole-number word problems, including remainders, using letters for unknowns and estimating to check.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Factors and multiples
- M.4.4 Find factor pairs for 1 to 100, recognize multiples and classify numbers as prime or composite.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Generate and analyze patterns
- M.4.5 Generate a number pattern from a rule, spot features not stated in the rule and explain informally why they occur.
Number and Operations in Base Ten – Place value for multi-digit whole numbers
- M.4.6 Understand that a digit is worth ten times what it would be in the place to its right, and use this with division.
- M.4.7 Read, write, compare and order multi-digit whole numbers using numerals, names, expanded form and place value.
- M.4.8 Round multi-digit whole numbers to any place using place value.
Number and Operations in Base Ten – Place value and properties for multi-digit arithmetic
- M.4.9 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers fluently with the standard algorithm.
- M.4.10 Multiply up to a four-digit number by a one-digit number and two two-digit numbers using place value; show with models.
- M.4.11 Find quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors and show them with models or strategies.
Number and Operations – Fractions – Fraction equivalence and ordering
Number and Operations – Fractions – Build fractions from unit fractions
- M.4.14 Understand a fraction a/b as a sum of unit fractions and use this to add, subtract and decompose.
- a. Add and subtract fractions with like denominators as joining and separating parts of one whole.
- b. Decompose a fraction into fractions with the same denominator in more than one way and justify each.
- c. Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators and say which two whole numbers they lie between.
- d. Solve word problems adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators using models and equations.
- M.4.15 Extend multiplication to multiplying a fraction by a whole number.
Number and Operations – Fractions – Decimal notation for fractions; compare decimals
- M.4.16 Write tenths as equivalent hundredths in order to add fractions with denominators 10 and 100.
- M.4.17 Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100, including in measurements and on number lines.
- M.4.18 Compare decimals to hundredths by reasoning about size (same whole only) and justify with a model.
Measurement and Data – Measurement and converting larger units to smaller ones
- M.4.19 Know relative sizes of metric, customary and time units and convert larger units to smaller ones in two-column tables.
- M.4.20 Solve word problems about distance, time, liquid volume, mass and money, including fractions, decimals and conversions.
- M.4.21 Apply rectangle area and perimeter formulas, seeing the area formula as multiplication with an unknown factor.
Measurement and Data – Represent and interpret data
- M.4.22 Make line plots of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths and solve fraction problems with the data.
Measurement and Data – Angles and angle measure
- M.4.23 Recognize angles as formed by two rays with a shared endpoint and understand measuring them with parts of a circle.
- M.4.24 Measure angles in whole degrees with a protractor and sketch angles of a given size.
- M.4.25 Treat angle measure as additive and solve equations for unknown angles in diagrams.
Geometry – Lines and angles; classify shapes
- M.4.26 Draw and identify points, lines, segments, rays, right, acute and obtuse angles, and perpendicular and parallel lines.
- M.4.27 Classify plane figures by parallel or perpendicular lines or angle sizes and identify right triangles.
- M.4.28 Recognize a line of symmetry as a fold line giving matching parts; identify and draw lines of symmetry.
