The standards (our summaries)

West Virginia's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Multiplication and division problems

  • M.3.1 Interpret a product of whole numbers as the total in a number of equal groups (e.g. 5 × 7).
  • M.3.2 Interpret a whole-number quotient as the size of each share or the number of equal groups (e.g. 56 ÷ 8).
  • M.3.3 Solve word problems within 100 with equal groups, arrays and measurement quantities.
  • M.3.4 Find the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three numbers.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Properties of multiplication; how it relates to division

  • M.3.5 Use properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide (concepts, not formal names).
  • M.3.6 Understand division as an unknown-factor problem.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Multiply and divide within 100

  • M.3.7 Multiply and divide within 100 fluently and know the 0s to 10s facts efficiently by the end of grade 3.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Four operations; patterns in arithmetic

  • M.3.8 Solve two-step word problems with equations using a letter for the unknown and check answers for reasonableness.
  • M.3.9 Find patterns in addition and multiplication tables and explain them with properties of operations.

Number and Operations in Base Ten – Place value and properties for multi-digit arithmetic

  • M.3.10 Read and write numbers to 10,000 in standard, word and expanded form.
  • M.3.11 Compare and order four-digit numbers by place value using comparison symbols.
  • M.3.12 Round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 using place value.
  • M.3.13 Add and subtract within 1000 fluently using place value strategies and algorithms.
  • M.3.14 Multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10 from 10 to 90 (e.g. 9 × 80).

Number and Operations – Fractions – Fractions as numbers

  • M.3.15 Understand unit fractions and fractions a/b as equal parts of a split whole (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8). (being checked)
  • M.3.16 Represent fractions on a number line.
    • a. Split 0 to 1 into b equal parts to place the unit fraction 1/b.
    • b. Mark off a lengths of 1/b from 0 to place a/b.
  • M.3.17 Explain equivalent fractions and compare fractions by size.
    • a. Know equivalent fractions are the same size or the same point on a number line.
    • b. Recognize and make simple equivalent fractions and explain why they are equal.
    • c. Write whole numbers as fractions and recognize fractions equal to whole numbers.
    • d. Compare fractions with the same numerator or denominator (same whole) and justify.

Measurement and Data – Time, liquid volume and mass

  • M.3.18 Tell and write time to the nearest minute and solve word problems about time intervals in minutes.
  • M.3.19 Measure and estimate liquid volume and mass in grams, kilograms and liters and solve one-step problems.

Measurement and Data – Represent and interpret data

  • M.3.20 Draw scaled picture graphs and bar graphs and solve one- and two-step "how many more or fewer" problems.
  • M.3.21 Measure lengths to the nearest half and quarter inch and show the data on a line plot.

Measurement and Data – Area and its link to multiplication and addition

  • M.3.22 Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand measuring it in unit squares.
    • a. Know a unit square (side 1) has an area of one square unit.
    • b. Know a figure covered by b unit squares with no gaps or overlaps has area b square units.
  • M.3.23 Measure area by counting unit squares in standard and improvised units.
  • M.3.24 Relate area to multiplication and addition.
    • a. Tile a rectangle with whole-number sides to show its area equals side length times side length.
    • b. Multiply side lengths to find rectangle areas in real-world and math problems.
    • c. Use tiling to show a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c and use area models for the distributive property.
    • d. Split rectilinear figures into non-overlapping rectangles and add their areas.

Measurement and Data – Perimeter

  • M.3.25 Solve perimeter problems for polygons, including unknown side lengths and rectangles with equal perimeter or equal area.

Geometry – Shapes and their attributes

  • M.3.26 Understand that shared attributes define larger categories; recognize rhombuses, rectangles and squares as quadrilaterals.
  • M.3.27 Split shapes into parts with equal areas and name each part as a unit fraction of the whole.
