The standards (our summaries)

South Dakota's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)

  • 4.OA.1 Interpret multiplication equations as comparisons.
    • 4.OA.1a Write and interpret multiplication equations as comparisons, e.g. 35 = 5 × 7.
    • 4.OA.1b Know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory.
  • 4.OA.2 Multiply or divide to solve multiplicative comparison problems, telling them apart from additive ones.
  • 4.OA.3 Solve multistep word problems with all four operations, including remainders, and check reasonableness.
  • 4.OA.4 Work with factors and multiples for whole numbers 1–100.
    • 4.OA.4a Find all factor pairs of a whole number.
    • 4.OA.4b Understand that any number is a multiple of each factor it has.
    • 4.OA.4c Decide whether a number is a multiple of a given one-digit number.
    • 4.OA.4d Decide whether a number is prime or composite.
  • 4.OA.5 Make number or shape patterns from a rule and describe features the rule does not state.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)

  • 4.NBT.1 Know a digit is worth ten times what it would be one place to its right.
  • 4.NBT.2 Read, write and compare multi-digit whole numbers.
    • 4.NBT.2a Read and write multi-digit numbers in standard, word and expanded form.
    • 4.NBT.2b Compare multi-digit numbers using >, = and <.
  • 4.NBT.3 Round whole numbers with several digits to any place value.
  • 4.NBT.4 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers fluently with an algorithm.
  • 4.NBT.5 Multiply up to four digits by one digit and two two-digit numbers using place value and models.
  • 4.NBT.6 Divide numbers of up to four digits by one-digit numbers, giving whole quotients and remainders.

Number and Operations – Fractions (NF)

  • 4.NF.1 Explain with models why a/b = (n × a)/(n × b) and use this to make equivalent fractions.
  • 4.NF.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators and justify.
  • 4.NF.3 Add, subtract and break apart fractions with the same denominator.
    • 4.NF.3a Add and subtract fractions that refer to the same whole.
    • 4.NF.3b Break a fraction into sums of like fractions in more than one way, with equations.
    • 4.NF.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers that share a denominator.
    • 4.NF.3d Solve word problems adding and subtracting like fractions.
  • 4.NF.4 Multiply a fraction by a whole number.
    • 4.NF.4a See a fraction a/b as a copies of the unit fraction 1/b.
    • 4.NF.4b Multiply a fraction by a whole number as a multiple of a unit fraction.
    • 4.NF.4c Solve word problems that multiply a fraction by a whole number.
  • 4.NF.5 Write tenths as hundredths and add them.
  • 4.NF.6 Read and write decimals for fractions with denominator 10 or 100 and place them on a number line.
  • 4.NF.7 Compare decimals to hundredths and justify.

Measurement and Data (MD)

  • 4.MD.1 Know relative sizes of units in one system and convert larger units to smaller ones using tables.
  • 4.MD.2 Solve word problems with all four operations about measures, money and unit conversions, using diagrams.
  • 4.MD.3 Apply rectangle area and perimeter formulas to real and math problems.
  • 4.MD.4 Make line plots of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths and solve problems with them.
  • 4.MD.5 Understand angles as measured by fractions of a circle.
    • 4.MD.5a Know a one-degree angle is 1/360 of a circle.
    • 4.MD.5b Know an angle made of n one-degree angles measures n degrees.
  • 4.MD.6 Measure whole-degree angles with a protractor and sketch angles of a given size.
  • 4.MD.7 Know angle measures add and solve for unknown angles with equations.

Geometry (G)

  • 4.G.1 Draw and identify points, lines, segments, rays, right, acute and obtuse angles and parallel and perpendicular lines.
  • 4.G.2 Classify 2D figures by parallel or perpendicular sides and angle types, including right, acute and obtuse triangles.
  • 4.G.3 Recognize and draw lines of symmetry in 2D figures.
