The standards (our summaries)

South Dakota's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)

  • 3.OA.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g. 5 × 7 as 5 groups of 7, and describe contexts for them.
  • 3.OA.2 Interpret whole-number quotients as equal shares or equal groups.
  • 3.OA.3 Solve multiplication and division word problems within 100 with equal groups, arrays and measures.
  • 3.OA.4 Find the missing whole number that makes a multiplication or division equation true.
  • 3.OA.5 Use operation properties as strategies for multiplying and dividing.
  • 3.OA.6 Understand division as finding an unknown factor.
  • 3.OA.7 Multiply and divide within 100 fluently using strategies.
    • 3.OA.7a Multiply and divide within 100 with strategies, e.g. using how the two operations relate.
    • 3.OA.7b Know all products of two one-digit numbers fluently.
  • 3.OA.8 Solve two-step word problems with all four operations, check reasonableness and follow order of operations.
  • 3.OA.9 Find arithmetic patterns, including in addition and multiplication tables, and explain them with properties.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)

  • 3.NBT.1 Round whole numbers to the closest ten or hundred.
  • 3.NBT.2 Add and subtract within 1,000 fluently using place value and algorithms.
  • 3.NBT.3 Multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of ten from 10 to 90 using place value and properties.

Number and Operations – Fractions (NF)

  • 3.NF.1 Understand 1/b as one of b equal parts of a whole and a/b as a parts of size 1/b.
  • 3.NF.2 Place fractions on a number line.
    • 3.NF.2a Place 1/b on a number line from 0 to 1 split into b equal parts.
    • 3.NF.2b Place a/b by marking off a lengths of 1/b from 0.
  • 3.NF.3 Explain equivalence and compare fractions by size (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8).
    • 3.NF.3a Know that equal fractions name the same size or the same spot on a number line.
    • 3.NF.3b Make and explain simple equivalent fractions such as 1/2 = 2/4.
    • 3.NF.3c Write whole numbers as fractions and recognize fractions equal to whole numbers.
    • 3.NF.3d Compare fractions with the same numerator or denominator using <, = and >.

Measurement and Data (MD)

  • 3.MD.1 Tell time to the nearest minute and solve time-interval problems on a number line.
  • 3.MD.2 Measure liquid volume and mass in grams, kilograms and liters and solve one-step word problems.
  • 3.MD.3 Draw scaled picture and bar graphs and solve one- and two-step how-many-more or how-many-less problems.
  • 3.MD.4 Measure lengths to halves and fourths of an inch and show the data on a line plot.
  • 3.MD.5 Understand area as covering a shape with unit squares.
    • 3.MD.5a Know a unit square has one square unit of area.
    • 3.MD.5b Know a shape covered by n unit squares with no gaps or overlaps has an area of n square units.
  • 3.MD.6 Measure area by counting unit squares in standard and improvised units.
  • 3.MD.7 Link area to multiplication and addition.
    • 3.MD.7a Find a rectangle's area by tiling and show it matches multiplying the side lengths.
    • 3.MD.7b Multiply side lengths to find areas and show products as rectangles.
    • 3.MD.7c Use tiling to show the distributive property with areas.
    • 3.MD.7d Find areas of rectilinear figures by splitting them into rectangles and adding.
  • 3.MD.8 Solve perimeter problems for polygons, including unknown sides and comparing shapes.
  • 3.MD.9 South Dakota addition: total a set of coins and bills, writing the dollar sign and decimal point correctly. (being checked)

Geometry (G)

  • 3.G.1 Know shapes can share attributes that define categories and identify rhombuses, rectangles and squares as quadrilaterals.
  • 3.G.2 Split shapes into equal-area parts and name each part as a unit fraction.
