The standards

New York's Next Generation Learning Standards, grouped by domain and cluster. NY codes start with "NY-".

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

  • Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems
  • NY-4.OA.1 Read multiplication equations as multiplicative comparisons and write comparison statements as equations.
  • NY-4.OA.2 Multiply or divide to solve comparison word problems, using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown.
  • NY-4.OA.3 Solve multistep whole-number word problems with the four operations, interpreting remainders where needed.
  • NY-4.OA.3a Represent multistep problems with equations or expressions using a letter for the unknown.
  • NY-4.OA.3b Judge whether answers are reasonable using mental math, estimation and rounding.
  • Gain familiarity with factors and multiples
  • NY-4.OA.4 Find factor pairs up to 100, recognize multiples, and classify numbers as prime or composite.
  • Generate and analyze patterns
  • NY-4.OA.5 Generate number or shape patterns from a rule and informally explain features of the pattern.

Number and Operations in Base Ten

  • Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers
  • NY-4.NBT.1 Recognize that a digit in one place is worth ten times what it is worth in the place to its right.
  • NY-4.NBT.2a Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using numerals, number names and expanded form.
  • NY-4.NBT.2b Compare multi-digit numbers by place value, recording results with >, = or <.
  • NY-4.NBT.3 Round multi-digit whole numbers to any place using place value understanding.
  • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic
  • NY-4.NBT.4 Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using a standard algorithm.
  • NY-4.NBT.5 Multiply up to four digits by one digit and two digits by two digits, illustrated and explained.
  • NY-4.NBT.6 Find quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, illustrated and explained.

Number and Operations - Fractions

  • Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering
  • NY-4.NF.1 Use visual models to explain why multiplying numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equivalent fraction.
  • NY-4.NF.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators (same whole) and justify the comparison.
  • Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understandings of operations on whole numbers
  • NY-4.NF.3 Understand a fraction a/b with a > 1 as a sum of unit fractions.
  • NY-4.NF.3a Understand adding and subtracting fractions as joining and separating parts of the same whole.
  • NY-4.NF.3b Decompose a fraction into a sum of same-denominator fractions in more than one way, with equations.
  • NY-4.NF.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators.
  • NY-4.NF.3d Solve word problems adding and subtracting like-denominator fractions of the same whole.
  • NY-4.NF.4 Multiply a fraction by a whole number.
  • NY-4.NF.4a Understand a fraction a/b as a multiple of 1/b, using visual models and equations.
  • NY-4.NF.4b Understand a multiple of a/b as a multiple of 1/b and use this to multiply a fraction by a whole number.
  • NY-4.NF.4c Solve word problems multiplying a fraction by a whole number, using models and equations.
  • Understand decimal notation for fractions, and compare decimal fractions
  • NY-4.NF.5 Express tenths as equivalent hundredths and add fractions with denominators 10 and 100.
  • NY-4.NF.6 Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100 and locate them on a number line.
  • NY-4.NF.7 Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about size, recording with >, = or <, and justify with a model.

Measurement and Data

  • Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit
  • NY-4.MD.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units and convert from larger to smaller units in a table.
  • NY-4.MD.2 Use the four operations to solve word problems about distance, time, liquid volume, mass and money.
  • NY-4.MD.2a Solve measurement problems with simple fractions or decimals, converting larger units to smaller ones.
  • NY-4.MD.2b Show measurement quantities on diagrams with a measurement scale, such as number lines.
  • NY-4.MD.3 Apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles, including finding an unknown side.
  • Represent and interpret data
  • NY-4.MD.4 Make line plots of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths and solve fraction problems from them.
  • Geometric measurement: understand concepts of angle and measure angles
  • NY-4.MD.5 Recognize angles as shapes formed by two rays with a shared endpoint and understand angle measurement. (to be re-checked)
  • NY-4.MD.5a An angle is measured against a circle; a one-degree angle turns through 1/360 of a circle. (to be re-checked)
  • NY-4.MD.5b An angle turning through n one-degree angles measures n degrees. (to be re-checked)
  • NY-4.MD.6 Measure angles in whole degrees with a protractor and sketch angles of a given measure.
  • NY-4.MD.7 Understand angle measure as additive and solve problems to find unknown angles.

Geometry

  • Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles
  • NY-4.G.1 Draw and identify points, lines, segments, rays, angle types, and perpendicular and parallel lines.
  • NY-4.G.2a Identify and name triangles as right, obtuse or acute by their angles.
