  • Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction
  • NY-1.OA.1 Solve one-step add-to, take-from, put-together, take-apart, and compare word problems within 20 with any unknown.
  • NY-1.OA.2 Solve word problems adding three whole numbers whose sum is 20 or less.
  • Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction
  • NY-1.OA.3 Use properties of operations, such as commutativity and associativity, as strategies to add and subtract.
  • NY-1.OA.4 Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem within 20.
  • Add and subtract within 20
  • NY-1.OA.5 Relate counting to addition and subtraction, such as counting on to add.
  • NY-1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20 using a variety of strategies, with fluency expectations.
  • NY-1.OA.6a Add and subtract within 20 using strategies like counting on, making ten, and creating easier equivalent sums.
  • NY-1.OA.6b Fluently add and subtract within 10.
  • Work with addition and subtraction equations
  • NY-1.OA.7 Understand the meaning of the equal sign and judge whether addition and subtraction equations are true.
  • NY-1.OA.8 Find the unknown whole number in addition or subtraction equations with the unknown in any position.

Number and Operations in Base Ten

  • Extend the counting sequence
  • NY-1.NBT.1 Count to 120 from any starting number below 120, and read and write numerals in that range.
  • Understand place value
  • NY-1.NBT.2 Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones.
  • NY-1.NBT.2a Understand that ten can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones, called a "ten".
  • NY-1.NBT.2b Understand that numbers 11 to 19 are a ten plus one to nine ones.
  • NY-1.NBT.2c Understand that 10, 20, through 90 refer to one to nine tens and zero ones.
  • NY-1.NBT.3 Compare two-digit numbers using tens and ones meanings, recording results with >, =, and <.
  • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract
  • NY-1.NBT.4 Add within 100 using place value, properties, or inverse relationships, and explain the reasoning.
  • NY-1.NBT.5 Mentally find 10 more or 10 less than a two-digit number, and explain the reasoning.
  • NY-1.NBT.6 Subtract multiples of 10 from multiples of 10 in the range 10 to 90 using models and strategies.

Measurement and Data

  • Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units
  • NY-1.MD.1 Order three objects by length and compare two lengths indirectly using a third object.
  • NY-1.MD.2 Measure length using same-size units placed end to end, expressing length as a whole number of units.
  • Tell and write time and money
  • NY-1.MD.3a Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.
  • NY-1.MD.3b Recognize and identify coins and their values, and use the cent symbol appropriately.
  • NY-1.MD.3c Count a mixed collection of dimes and pennies and determine its cent value up to 100.
  • Represent and interpret data
  • NY-1.MD.4 Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories, and answer comparison questions.

Geometry

  • Reason with shapes and their attributes
  • NY-1.G.1 Distinguish defining from non-defining shape attributes, and build or draw shapes with defining attributes.
  • NY-1.G.2 Compose two- and three-dimensional shapes into composite shapes, and compose new shapes from them.
  • NY-1.G.3 Partition circles and rectangles into equal shares, and describe them as halves, fourths, or quarters.
