The standards (our summaries)
New Jersey's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking (3.OA)
- 3.OA.A.1 Interpret a product such as 5 × 7 as the total in 5 groups of 7 objects.
- 3.OA.A.2 Interpret a whole-number quotient as the size of each share or as the number of equal groups.
- 3.OA.A.3 Solve word problems within 100 about equal groups, arrays and measures by multiplying or dividing.
- 3.OA.A.4 Work out the missing whole number in a three-number multiplication or division equation, e.g. 8 × ? = 48.
- 3.OA.B.5 Apply properties such as commutative, associative and distributive to multiply and divide (names not required).
- 3.OA.B.6 Understand division as an unknown-factor problem, e.g. 32 ÷ 8 as "what times 8 makes 32?".
- 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide within 100 accurately and efficiently; know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of grade 3.
- 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step word problems with the four operations using equations with a letter for the unknown; check answers for reasonableness.
- 3.OA.D.9 Find patterns in arithmetic, including in addition and multiplication tables, and explain them with properties of operations.
Number and Operations in Base Ten (3.NBT)
Number and Operations—Fractions (3.NF)
- 3.NF.A.1 Understand a unit fraction 1/b as one of b equal parts of a whole and a/b as a of those parts (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, 8).
- 3.NF.A.2 See fractions as numbers with their own place on a number line.
- 3.NF.A.3 Explain simple cases of equal fractions and compare fractions by thinking about their size.
- a. Two fractions are equivalent if they are the same size or at the same point on a number line.
- b. Recognize and make simple equivalent fractions and explain why they are equal using models.
- c. Write whole numbers as fractions and recognize fractions equal to whole numbers.
- d. Compare two fractions that share a numerator or a denominator and record with >, = or <.
Measurement (3.M)
- 3.M.A.1 Tell and write the time to the minute and solve word problems about elapsed time in minutes.
- 3.M.A.2 Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses in grams, kilograms and liters and solve one-step problems with them.
- 3.M.B.3 Recognize area as an attribute of flat shapes and understand measuring area with unit squares.
- 3.M.B.4 Measure areas by counting unit squares in standard units (square cm, m, in, ft) and non-standard units.
- 3.M.B.5 Relate area to multiplication and addition.
- a. Tile a rectangle with unit squares and show the area equals the product of its side lengths.
- b. Find rectangle areas by multiplying side lengths in real and math problems.
- c. Use tiling and area models to show a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c (distributive property).
- d. Find areas of rectilinear shapes by splitting them into rectangles and adding the areas.
- 3.M.C.6 Solve perimeter problems, including finding an unknown side, and compare rectangles with equal perimeters or equal areas.
Data Literacy (3.DL)
- 3.DL.A.1 Write questions that can be answered with data and decide what data would answer them.
- 3.DL.A.2 Collect data about students' own lives or use existing data sets to answer questions.
- 3.DL.B.3 Draw scaled picture and bar graphs for several categories and solve "how many more/less" problems with them.
- 3.DL.B.4 Measure lengths to the nearest half and quarter inch and show the data on a line plot.
Geometry (3.G)
