The standards (our summaries)

Montana's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)

  • MT.4.OA.1 Interpret multiplication equations as multiplicative comparisons and the reverse.
  • MT.4.OA.2 Multiply or divide to solve multiplicative comparisons, telling them apart from additive ones.
  • MT.4.OA.3 Solve multistep whole-number problems, interpret remainders and check reasonableness, including Montana contexts.
  • MT.4.OA.4 Find factor pairs and multiples and decide if numbers up to 100 are prime or composite.
  • MT.4.OA.5 Analyze number or shape patterns from a rule and explain features the rule does not state.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)

  • MT.4.NBT.1 Know each place in a multi-digit number is worth ten times the place to its right.
  • MT.4.NBT.2 Read, write and compare multi-digit numbers in standard, word and expanded form.
  • MT.4.NBT.3 Round whole numbers with several digits to any place value.
  • MT.4.NBT.4 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers with the standard algorithm.
  • MT.4.NBT.5 Multiply up to four digits by one digit and two two-digit numbers, with models.
  • MT.4.NBT.6 Divide up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers, with remainders, shown with models.

Number and Operations – Fractions (NF)

  • MT.4.NF.1 Explain with visual models why multiplying numerator and denominator by the same number gives equivalent fractions.
  • MT.4.NF.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators and justify.
  • MT.4.NF.3 Break fractions into sums of unit fractions, add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers and solve problems.
  • MT.4.NF.4 Multiply a fraction by a whole number, including in Montana cultural contexts.
  • MT.4.NF.5 Write tenths as hundredths and add fractions with denominators 10 and 100.
  • MT.4.NF.6 Write fractions with denominator 10 or 100 as decimals.
  • MT.4.NF.7 Compare decimals to hundredths and justify.

Measurement and Data (MD)

  • MT.4.MD.1 Know relative sizes of units in a system and convert larger units to smaller ones.
  • MT.4.MD.2 Use all four operations with distance, time, volume, mass and money, including Montana cultural contexts.
  • MT.4.MD.3 Use area and perimeter formulas for rectangles, including in context.
  • MT.4.MD.4 Make line plots of fractional measurements and solve addition and subtraction problems from them.
  • MT.4.MD.5 Understand angles as measured in degrees, with a full circle as 360 degrees.
  • MT.4.MD.6 Measure whole-degree angles with a protractor and sketch angles of a given size.
  • MT.4.MD.7 Know angle measures add and solve for unknown angles, including in context.

Geometry (G)

  • MT.4.G.1 Draw and identify points, lines, rays, angles and parallel and perpendicular lines.
  • MT.4.G.2 Classify 2D figures by parallel or perpendicular lines or angles and identify right triangles.
  • MT.4.G.3 Recognize and draw lines of symmetry, using designs and Montana cultural contexts.
