The standards (our summaries)

Minnesota's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Strand 1: Number & Operation

  • 5.1.1.1 Divide multi-digit numbers using place value, giving quotients as remainders, fractions or decimals.
  • 5.1.1.2 Choose the most useful form of a quotient and interpret it in context.
  • 5.1.1.3 Estimate to judge whether answers are reasonable.
  • 5.1.1.4 Solve multi-step whole-number problems with all four operations and check reasonableness.
  • 5.1.2.1 Read and write decimals, naming place values from millionths to millions.
  • 5.1.2.2 Find 0.1, 0.01 or 0.001 more or less than a number.
  • 5.1.2.3 Order fractions and decimals, including mixed numbers, and place them on a number line.
  • 5.1.2.4 Convert between equivalent decimals, fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions in context.
  • 5.1.2.5 Round decimals to the nearest tenth, hundredth or thousandth.
  • 5.1.3.1 Add and subtract decimals and fractions with efficient general methods such as standard algorithms.
  • 5.1.3.2 Model adding and subtracting decimals and fractions with visual models.
  • 5.1.3.3 Estimate sums and differences of decimals and fractions to check answers.
  • 5.1.3.4 Solve problems with decimals, fractions and mixed numbers in measurement, geometry and data.

Strand 2: Algebra

  • 5.2.1.1 Use rules, tables, spreadsheets and graphs to describe patterns of change and solve problems.
  • 5.2.1.2 Use a rule or table for ordered pairs of positive integers and plot them on a grid.
  • 5.2.2.1 Use commutative, associative and distributive properties and order of operations to write equivalent expressions.
  • 5.2.3.1 Decide whether an equation or inequality with a variable is true for a given value.
  • 5.2.3.2 Represent real situations with equations and inequalities with variables, and the reverse.
  • 5.2.3.3 Evaluate expressions and solve equations when variable values are given.

Strand 3: Geometry & Measurement

  • 5.3.1.1 Describe and classify prisms and pyramids by edges, faces, vertices and face shapes.
  • 5.3.1.2 Recognize and draw nets that fold into 3D figures.
  • 5.3.2.1 Develop and use area formulas for triangles, parallelograms and shapes split into triangles.
  • 5.3.2.2 Measure volume and surface area of rectangular prisms with various tools and strategies.
  • 5.3.2.3 Understand volume as the number of same-size cubes filling a solid, in cubic units.
  • 5.3.2.4 Develop and explain the volume formula for rectangular prisms using layers of cubes.

Strand 4: Data Analysis & Probability

  • 5.4.1.1 Know and find mean, median and range (including with spreadsheets); see mean as leveling out.
  • 5.4.1.2 Make and interpret double-bar and line graphs with whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
