    • a. Read and write numbers as numerals, words and expanded form.
    • b. Compose and decompose numbers.
    • c. Estimate with number lines, benchmarks and rounding to the nearest 10 or 100.

Number and Operation Sense – 3.NOS.B: Represent and interpret multiplication and division

  • 3.NOS.B.2 Show products of factors 0 to 10 as equal groups or repeated units and explain how factors relate to the product.
  • 3.NOS.B.3 Show quotients within 0 to 10 as sharing (partitive) or grouping (quotative) division and explain how dividend, divisor and quotient relate.

Number and Operation Sense – 3.NOS.C: Properties of multiplication and its link to division

  • 3.NOS.C.4 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties as strategies for multiplying.
  • 3.NOS.C.5 Use the inverse relationship of multiplication and division to find an unknown number in an equation with three whole numbers.

Number and Operation Sense – 3.NOS.D: Place value and properties for multi-digit arithmetic

  • 3.NOS.D.6 Estimate sums and differences within 1,000 with benchmarks and front-end estimation; decide when an estimate is enough.
  • 3.NOS.D.7 Add and subtract fluently within 1,000 using efficient strategies, properties and inverse relationships.
    • a. Use strategies such as decomposing, partial sums, compensation and making a ten, hundred or thousand.
    • b. Use properties of operations and/or the inverse relationship of addition and subtraction.
    • c. Choose the most efficient strategy and explain why.
  • 3.NOS.D.8 Multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10 from 10 to 90 using place value and properties.

Number and Operation Sense – 3.NOS.E: Multiply and divide within 100

  • 3.NOS.E.9 Recall or quickly work out multiplication and division facts within 100 (factors and quotients up to 10).
    • a. Skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s and use the properties of 0 and 1.
    • b. Work out unknown facts from known facts, for example by doubling.
    • c. Use properties of operations, such as splitting a factor.
    • d. Use the inverse relationship of multiplication and division.

Number and Operation Sense – 3.NOS.F: Fractions as numbers

  • 3.NOS.F.10 Recognize and explain a fraction as a part of a whole.
    • a. Split shapes into parts of equal area and name each part as a unit fraction.
    • b. Explain a fraction as one or more equal parts of a whole split into equal parts.
  • 3.NOS.F.11 Explain a fraction of a set as the number of items that make up part of a given set of objects.
  • 3.NOS.F.12 Represent fractions as numbers on a number line.
    • a. Split 0 to 1 into equal lengths and place unit fractions.
    • b. Mark off several unit-fraction lengths from 0 to place a fraction.
  • 3.NOS.F.13 Explain equivalent fractions and compare fraction sizes, knowing comparisons only hold for the same whole.
    • a. Define equivalent fractions as the same size or the same point on a number line.
    • b. Recognize, generate and explain equivalent fractions.
    • c. Write whole numbers, including 1, as fractions.
    • d. Compare fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator and justify the result.

Algebraic Thinking – 3.AT.A: Problems with the four operations; arithmetic patterns

  • 3.AT.A.1 Use multiplication and division within 100 for one-step problems with equal groups, arrays and area.
  • 3.AT.A.2 Solve two-step problems with the four operations and check whether answers are reasonable.
    • a. Write equations for the problem using a letter for the unknown.
    • b. Check reasonableness with mental math, rounding, front-end estimation and benchmarks.
  • 3.AT.A.3 Identify arithmetic patterns and explain them using properties of operations.

Geometric Reasoning and Measurement – 3.GR.A: Time, liquid volume and mass

  • 3.GR.A.1 Measure lengths to the nearest half and quarter unit with suitable tools.
  • 3.GR.A.2 Solve addition and subtraction problems about time intervals in minutes.

  • 3.GR.A.4 Solve one-step problems with masses or volumes in the same units using any operation.

Geometric Reasoning and Measurement – 3.GR.B: Shapes and their attributes

  • 3.GR.B.5 Explain that shapes in different categories can share attributes that define a larger category, such as quadrilaterals.

Geometric Reasoning and Measurement – 3.GR.C: Area and perimeter

  • 3.GR.C.6 Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and measure the area of rectangles by counting unit squares.
