The standards (our summaries)

Maryland's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Number and Operation Sense – 2.NOS.A: Place value and representing numbers

  • 2.NOS.A.1 Understand 100 as ten tens (one hundred) and compose and decompose three-digit numbers.
    • a. Break numbers into hundreds, tens and ones with objects, drawings or equations.
    • b. Describe a number as so many hundreds, tens and ones.
    • c. Compose and decompose numbers in more than one way.
  • 2.NOS.A.2 Count forward and backward within 1000 from any number and skip count, including to total arrays.
    • a. Skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s and 100s.
    • b. Skip count to find the total of an array with up to 5 rows and 5 columns.
  • 2.NOS.A.3 Read and write numbers to 1000 as numerals, number names and expanded form.
  • 2.NOS.A.4 Compare two three-digit numbers using place value and/or number line position; record with >, = and <.
  • 2.NOS.A.5 Estimate using number line positions and benchmarks, and judge whether sums and differences are reasonable.

Number and Operation Sense – 2.NOS.B: Add and subtract within 20

  • 2.NOS.B.6 Recall or quickly work out addition and subtraction facts within 20.
    • a. Use counting on, making ten, ten more or less and doubles.
    • b. Use make-ten and doubles-plus-one strategies.
    • c. Use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction.

Number and Operation Sense – 2.NOS.C: Representations, place value and properties to add and subtract

  • 2.NOS.C.7 Show sums and differences of whole numbers within 100 as lengths on a number line.
  • 2.NOS.C.8 Add and subtract fluently within 100 with counting, place value, properties and inverse operations.
    • a. Use counting-based and place value strategies.
    • b. Use properties of operations and the inverse relationship.
    • c. Choose the most efficient strategy and explain why.
  • 2.NOS.C.9 Add and subtract within 1000 by combining like place values, composing or decomposing tens and hundreds as needed.
    • a. Use concrete models or drawings.
    • b. Use place value strategies.
    • c. Use properties of operations and the inverse relationship.
    • d. Explain the calculation by linking the strategy to the meaning of addition or subtraction.
  • 2.NOS.C.10 Mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 to or from a number between 100 and 900.

Number and Operation Sense – 2.NOS.D: Equal parts of a whole

  • 2.NOS.D.11 Split circles and rectangles into equal halves, thirds or fourths and count the shares that make a whole.

Algebraic Thinking – 2.AT.A: Addition and subtraction problems

  • 2.AT.A.1 Solve one-step addition and subtraction word problems within 100 with the unknown in any position, using models and symbols.
  • 2.AT.A.2 Solve two-step addition and subtraction word problems within 100 with the unknown in any position, using models and equations.

Algebraic Thinking – 2.AT.B: Patterns in numbers

  • 2.AT.B.3 Decide whether a group of up to 20 objects is odd or even and write an even number as a sum of two equal addends.

Geometric Reasoning and Measurement – 2.GR.A: Measure and estimate length in standard units

  • 2.GR.A.1 Measure the length of an object to the nearest whole unit with a suitable tool.
  • 2.GR.A.2 Measure one object with two different units and explain how the results relate to unit size.
  • 2.GR.A.3 Estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters and meters.
  • 2.GR.A.4 Measure to find how much longer one object is than another in a standard unit.
