The standards (our summaries)

Kentucky's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Number and Quantity (N)

  • KY.HS.N.5 and KY.HS.N.6 (choosing quantities and suitable accuracy for modeling) are also part of this course; they are listed under Algebra 1.
  • KY.HS.N.7 Understand complex numbers, including the imaginary unit i.
    • a. Know that i² = –1 and that complex numbers have the form a + bi.
    • b. Add, subtract and multiply complex numbers using the usual properties.
  • KY.HS.N.9 Solve quadratic equations with real coefficients that have complex solutions.
  • KY.HS.N.14 Use matrices to represent and work with data.
  • KY.HS.N.15 Calculate with matrices.
    • a. Add, subtract and multiply matrices of suitable dimensions.
    • b. Multiply a matrix by a scalar.

Algebra (A)

  • Also in this course (listed under Algebra 1): KY.HS.A.1 part b, A.2, A.3 part a, A.7, A.12–A.15 and A.24.
  • KY.HS.A.19 (solving quadratics) is also in this course, here including complex solutions written a ± bi.
  • KY.HS.A.17 Solve one-variable equations, explain each step and spot extraneous solutions.
    • a. Solve rational equations written as proportions.
    • b. Solve radical equations.
  • KY.HS.A.21 Solve a system of a linear and a quadratic equation algebraically and by graphing.

Functions (F)

  • Also in this course (listed under Algebra 1): KY.HS.F.1 parts c–e, F.3, F.6 part b and F.13.
  • KY.HS.F.4 here covers parts b–d: graphing root and absolute value functions, polynomials, and exponential and log functions.
  • KY.HS.F.8 Understand how transformations change the graph of a function.
    • a. Find the effect of f(x) + k, kf(x), f(kx) and f(x + k) and find k from graphs.
    • b. Use technology to explore the effects of transformations.
  • KY.HS.F.9 Find inverse functions.
    • a. Find the inverse of an invertible function from its equation.
  • KY.HS.F.10 Use the inverse link between exponents and logarithms to solve problems.

Statistics and Probability (SP)

  • KY.HS.SP.1 Show data distributions with plots on the number line.
  • KY.HS.SP.2 Compare center and spread with statistics that suit the shape of the data.
  • KY.HS.SP.3 Interpret differences in shape, center and spread, including the effect of outliers.
  • KY.HS.SP.5 Summarize two-way frequency tables and find joint, marginal and conditional relative frequencies.
  • KY.HS.SP.9 Use random samples to make inferences about a population.
  • KY.HS.SP.10 Decide whether a model fits the results of a simulation.
  • KY.HS.SP.11 Tell surveys, experiments and observational studies apart and explain randomization.
  • KY.HS.SP.12 Estimate a population mean or proportion from a sample and explain possible bias.
  • KY.HS.SP.13 Compare two treatments in a randomized experiment and use simulation to judge significance.
  • KY.HS.SP.14 Describe events as subsets of a sample space and find basic probabilities.
  • KY.HS.SP.15 Understand independent events.
    • a. Know events are independent when P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B).
    • c. Explain independence in everyday language and situations.
  • KY.HS.SP.16 Understand conditional probability.
    • a. Know the probability of A given B is P(A and B) ÷ P(B).
    • c. Explain conditional probability in everyday language and situations.
    • d. Find a conditional probability as the share of B's outcomes that are also in A.
  • KY.HS.SP.19 Use permutations and combinations to find probabilities.
    • a. Decide when to use the counting principle, permutations or combinations.
