The standards (our summaries)

Arizona's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)

  • 3.OA.A.1 Interpret a product such as 5 × 7 as the total in 5 equal groups of 7, and describe situations that match.
  • 3.OA.A.2 Interpret a quotient such as 56 ÷ 8 as the size of each share or as the number of equal shares.
  • 3.OA.A.3 Solve multiplication and division word problems within 100 about equal groups, arrays and measurements, using drawings and equations.
  • 3.OA.A.4 Work out the missing number in a multiply or divide equation such as 8 × ? = 48.
  • 3.OA.B.5 Use properties of operations (commutative, associative, distributive) as strategies to multiply and divide.
  • 3.OA.B.6 See division as finding an unknown factor (e.g. 32 ÷ 8 by asking what times 8 makes 32).
  • 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide within 100 fluently, with facts through 10 × 10. (being checked)
  • 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step word problems with all four operations and write equations with a letter for the unknown.
  • 3.OA.D.9 Find patterns in arithmetic, such as in addition and multiplication tables, and explain them using properties of operations.
  • 3.OA.D.10 Check whether answers are reasonable using mental math and estimation, including rounding. (being checked)

Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)

  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to round whole numbers to the nearest ten or hundred.
  • 3.NBT.A.2 Add and subtract within 1000 fluently using place-value strategies and algorithms.
  • 3.NBT.A.3 Multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10 from 10 to 90 using place value and properties of operations.

Number and Operations—Fractions (NF)

  • 3.NF.A.1 Understand 1/b as one of b equal parts of a whole and a/b as a such parts.
  • 3.NF.A.2 Understand fractions as numbers on the number line, including fractions greater than 1.
    • a. Place 1/b on a number line by splitting 0 to 1 into b equal parts.
    • b. Place a/b on a number line by marking off a lengths of 1/b from 0.
    • c. Recognize that a unit fraction (1/b) is a special kind of fraction. (being checked)
  • 3.NF.A.3 Explain equivalent fractions in simple cases and compare fractions by reasoning about size.
    • a. Know two fractions are equivalent if they are the same size or at the same point on a number line.
    • b. Recognize and make simple equivalent fractions and explain why they are equal, e.g. with a model.
    • c. Write whole numbers as fractions and spot fractions equal to whole numbers (e.g. 3 = 3/1, 4/4 = 1).
    • d. Compare fractions that share a numerator or a denominator, for the same whole, and record with >, = or <.

Measurement and Data (MD)

  • 3.MD.A.1 Read and write clock times to the minute and solve word problems about time and money.
    • a. Solve word problems adding and subtracting time intervals in minutes.
    • b. Solve word problems involving money up to $20.00, using $ and ¢ symbols.
  • 3.MD.A.2 Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses in grams, kilograms and liters and solve one-step word problems with them.
  • 3.MD.B.3 Draw scaled picture and bar graphs and answer one- and two-step "how many more or fewer" questions from them.
  • 3.MD.B.4 Measure lengths to the half and quarter inch and show the data on a line plot.
  • 3.MD.C.5 Recognize area as a property of flat shapes and understand how area is measured.
    • a. A unit square (side 1 unit) has an area of one square unit and is used to measure area.
    • b. A shape covered with no gaps or overlaps by n unit squares has an area of n square units.
  • 3.MD.C.6 Measure area by counting unit squares (square cm, m, in, ft or improvised units).
  • 3.MD.C.7 Connect area to multiplication and addition.
    • a. Find a rectangle's area by tiling and show it equals the product of the side lengths.
    • b. Multiply side lengths to find rectangle areas in real-world and math problems.
    • c. Use tiling and area models to show the distributive property: a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c.
    • d. Find the area of rectilinear shapes by splitting them into rectangles and adding the areas.
  • 3.MD.C.8 Solve perimeter problems for polygons, including unknown side lengths, and compare rectangles with equal perimeter or equal area. (being checked)

Geometry (G)

  • 3.G.A.1 Know shapes in different categories can share attributes that define a larger category (quadrilaterals); recognize rhombuses, rectangles and squares and draw other quadrilaterals.
  • 3.G.A.2 Split shapes into equal-area parts and name each part's area as a unit fraction of the whole.
