The standards (our summaries)

Alaska's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Counting and Cardinality (CC)

  • K.CC.1 Count aloud to 100 in ones and in tens.
  • K.CC.2 Count forward from a given number instead of starting at 1.
  • K.CC.3 Write the numerals 0–20 and use a numeral to show how many objects there are (0 for none).
  • K.CC.4 Link counting to quantity: understand how number names match the size of a set.
    • a. Count objects by saying number names in order, matching one name to each object.
    • b. Know the last number said gives the total, whatever the arrangement or counting order.
    • c. Know each next number name stands for a quantity one bigger.
  • K.CC.5 Count up to 20 objects to say how many there are, and count out a set of a given size.
  • K.CC.6 Tell whether one group has more, fewer or the same number of objects as another, by matching or counting.
  • K.CC.7 Compare two written numerals between 1 and 10.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)

  • K.OA.1 Show addition and subtraction in many ways: objects, fingers, drawings, sounds, acting out, words, expressions or equations.
  • K.OA.2 Solve addition and subtraction story problems within 10, using objects or drawings to model them.
  • K.OA.3 Break numbers up to 10 into pairs in different ways and record each split with a drawing or equation.
  • K.OA.4 For any number, find the partner that makes 5 or 10 (with objects or drawings).
  • K.OA.5 Add and subtract within 5 fluently.
  • K.OA.6 Copy and extend simple patterns based on color, shape or size.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)

  • K.NBT.1 Build and break apart 11–19 as ten ones plus extra ones, recording with drawings or equations (e.g. 18 = 10 + 8).

Measurement and Data (MD)

  • K.MD.1 Describe measurable attributes such as length and weight and choose a suitable measuring tool.
  • K.MD.2 Compare two objects directly by a shared attribute and describe which has more or less of it (e.g. taller/shorter).
  • K.MD.3 Sort objects into given categories, count each category and order the categories by count.
  • K.MD.4 Name the days of the week in order.
  • K.MD.5 Tell time to the hour on analog and digital clocks.
  • K.MD.6 Identify coins by name.

Geometry (G)

  • K.G.1 Name shapes seen in the environment and describe where things are using words like above, below, beside and behind.
  • K.G.2 Name shapes correctly whatever their size or orientation.
  • K.G.3 Tell flat (two-dimensional) shapes from solid (three-dimensional) shapes.
  • K.G.4 Compare 2-D and 3-D shapes of different sizes and orientations in informal language, noting sides, corners and other features.
  • K.G.5 Model real-world shapes by building them from parts (e.g. sticks and clay) and by drawing them.
  • K.G.6 Put simple shapes together to make larger shapes.
Standards for Mathematical Practice (apply to every grade)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

  • MP.1 Make sense of problems and keep going until they are solved. (being checked)
  • MP.2 Reason with quantities both abstractly (symbols) and in context.
  • MP.3 Build sound arguments and evaluate the reasoning of others.
  • MP.4 Use mathematics to model real situations.
  • MP.5 Choose and use tools wisely.
  • MP.6 Be precise in language, symbols, units and calculation.
  • MP.7 Look for structure and use it.
  • MP.8 Notice repeated reasoning and turn it into general methods.
