The standards (our summaries)

Alaska's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)

  • 2.OA.1 Estimate, then solve one- and two-step add/subtract word problems within 100.
  • 2.OA.2 Add and subtract within 20 fluently with mental strategies and know all sums of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of grade 2.
  • 2.OA.3 Decide if a group of up to 20 objects is odd or even; write an even number as a double (e.g. 8 = 4 + 4).
  • 2.OA.4 Use repeated addition to find the total in a rectangular array of up to 5 by 5 and write the matching equation.
  • 2.OA.5 Find and describe patterns in number sequences and explain the rule.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)

  • 2.NBT.1 Know that in a three-digit number the digits count hundreds, tens and ones.
    • a. See 100 as one bundle of ten tens, which we call a "hundred".
    • b. Know 100, 200, … 900 mean one to nine hundreds with no tens or ones.
  • 2.NBT.2 Count within 1000 and skip-count by 5s, 10s and 100s.
  • 2.NBT.3 Read and write numbers to 1000 as numerals, in words and in expanded form.
  • 2.NBT.4 Compare two three-digit numbers by place value, recording with >, = and <.
  • 2.NBT.5 Add and subtract within 100 fluently using place-value strategies, properties of operations or related facts.
  • 2.NBT.6 Add as many as four two-digit numbers with place-value strategies and properties of operations.
  • 2.NBT.7 Add and subtract within 1000 with models and place-value strategies, link them to a written method, and compose or decompose tens and hundreds.
  • 2.NBT.8 Mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 to or from a number between 100 and 900.
  • 2.NBT.9 Use place value and properties of operations to explain why add and subtract strategies work.

Measurement and Data (MD)

  • 2.MD.1 Choose and use length tools (ruler, yardstick, meter stick, tape measure) to measure objects.
  • 2.MD.2 Measure an object twice with different units and explain how the measurements relate to the unit size.
  • 2.MD.3 Estimate, measure and draw lengths in whole standard units.
  • 2.MD.4 Find the difference in length between two objects in a standard unit.
  • 2.MD.5 Solve add/subtract word problems within 100 about lengths in the same unit, using drawings and equations.
  • 2.MD.6 Show whole numbers as lengths on a number line and show sums and differences within 100 on it.
  • 2.MD.7 Tell and write time to the nearest five minutes on analog and digital clocks, using a.m. and p.m.
  • 2.MD.8 Solve word problems with bills and coins (quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies) using the $ and ¢ symbols.
  • 2.MD.9 Collect, record and describe data in tables or line plots.
  • 2.MD.10 Draw picture and bar graphs for up to four categories and solve simple problems using a bar graph.

Geometry (G)

  • 2.G.1 Recognize and draw shapes with given attributes and identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
  • 2.G.2 Split a rectangle into rows and columns of equal squares and count them.
  • 2.G.3 Split circles and rectangles into 2, 3 or 4 equal shares, name them, and see equal shares of the same whole can look different.
Standards for Mathematical Practice (apply to every grade)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

  • MP.1 Make sense of problems and keep going until they are solved. (being checked)
  • MP.2 Reason with quantities both abstractly (symbols) and in context.
  • MP.3 Build sound arguments and evaluate the reasoning of others.
  • MP.4 Use mathematics to model real situations.
  • MP.5 Choose and use tools wisely.
  • MP.6 Be precise in language, symbols, units and calculation.
  • MP.7 Look for structure and use it.
  • MP.8 Notice repeated reasoning and turn it into general methods.
