The tests
About these tests
Free, self-marking math practice tests for middle school and high school. There is a test for every domain of the Common Core State Standards in grades 6, 7 and 8 (ratios and proportional relationships, the number system, expressions and equations, functions in grade 8, geometry, and statistics and probability), eight Algebra 1 topics and six Geometry topics.
Each grade and course also has a mixed review in the style of a state math test or end-of-course test. These are practice tests written by Classfern. They are not official tests, they are not produced by any state or testing program, and a score here does not predict a score on a real test.
Every question is tagged with the Common Core standard it practices (and, where our standards data records a direct match, the matching code in a state’s own standards). Each test draws 20 questions from a larger bank, so Try again gives a new mix.
Key facts
- The Common Core State Standards say that in Grade 6, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: ratio and rate; division of fractions and the system of rational numbers, including negative numbers; expressions and equations; and statistical thinking. Source: Common Core State Standards – Grade 6 Introduction
- For Grade 7 the four critical areas are proportional relationships; operations with rational numbers, expressions and linear equations; scale drawings, informal geometric constructions, area, surface area and volume; and drawing inferences about populations from samples. Source: Common Core State Standards – Grade 7 Introduction
- For Grade 8 there are three critical areas: expressions and equations (including linear equations, systems and modeling bivariate data with a line); functions; and two- and three-dimensional geometry, including the Pythagorean Theorem. Source: Common Core State Standards – Grade 8 Introduction
- The Common Core high school standards do not mandate a sequence of high school courses. Sample pathways include a traditional sequence of Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II, and an integrated sequence. Source: Common Core State Standards – Note on courses and transitions
- Federal regulations require states to give mathematics assessments in each of grades 3 through 8 and at least once in grades 9 through 12. Source: 34 CFR 200.5 (eCFR)
How to use these tests
- Pick the test for the topic your student is working on, or the mixed review for the whole grade or course.
- Choose Practice to see the answer and an explanation after each question, or Test to answer all 20 first.
- Use scratch paper. A calculator is fine in Algebra 1 and Geometry, and some grade 8 questions ask you to round.
- Look at the explanations for any question you missed, then use Try again for a fresh set from the same bank.
How we wrote these tests
Answers are checked by computer programs, and every test is reviewed by an independent AI checker that didn't write it. Spot a mistake? Use the Report button.
Plan the teaching
Use these tests for review at home or in class. See what to teach in Grade 6 Math, Grade 7 Math, Grade 8 Math, Algebra I, Geometry, then plan lessons with the free Lesson Plan Maker.
