What it does

Type English and it appears in ogham characters, bracketed by the feather-shaped marks that open and close an inscription. Put ogham characters in to turn them back into letters, use Swap to move the result into the input, and copy or clear as needed. The tool spells sounds letter by letter rather than translating into Irish. English letters without an ogham partner borrow the closest one: J and Y share I, K uses C, V and W use F, and P is written with peith, a letter added later. A chart gives every ogham letter with its traditional name.

Ogham was mostly used for early Irish. Several hundred carved stones survive in Ireland, with others in Wales, the Isle of Man and Scotland; most are short memorials naming a person. Each letter is one to five strokes against a central line, often the stone's edge, in four groups of five. Many letter names are traditionally tied to trees, for example beith (birch) and dair (oak). Stones were normally read from the bottom up, but the tool runs it horizontally to suit a screen.

Questions

Is ogham a language or an alphabet?

An alphabet. It was mostly used to write early Irish; here it spells English.

Why did J turn into I?

English has more letters than ogham, so a few have to share; I, J and Y all use one letter.

Which direction does it read?

Stones usually run upwards along an edge, while books and screens tend to set it out horizontally.

What are the arrow shapes at the ends?

Feather marks, which signal the beginning and end of an inscription.
