The standards (our summaries)

Utah's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (4.OA)

  • 4.OA.1 Read 35 = 5 × 7 as a comparison (35 is five times 7) and write comparison statements as equations.
  • 4.OA.2 Solve word problems with multiplicative comparison, telling it apart from additive comparison.
  • 4.OA.3 Solve multistep whole-number word problems with the four operations, interpreting remainders.
    • a. Write equations with a letter for the unknown to represent multistep problems.
    • b. Judge whether answers are reasonable using mental math, estimation and rounding.
  • 4.OA.4 Find all factor pairs of a number from 1 to 100, decide if it is a multiple of a one-digit number, and decide if it is prime or composite.
  • 4.OA.5 Create a number or shape pattern from a rule and spot features of the pattern that the rule does not state.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (4.NBT)

  • 4.NBT.1 Know that in a whole number a digit is worth ten times what it would be worth one place to the right.
  • 4.NBT.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers in numerals, words and expanded form and compare them using >, = and <.
  • 4.NBT.3 Use place value to round a multi-digit whole number to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand or any other place.
  • 4.NBT.4 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers fluently with the standard algorithm.
  • 4.NBT.5 Multiply up to four digits by one digit and two digits by two digits with place-value strategies, explained with equations, arrays or area models.
  • 4.NBT.6 Divide up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers, with remainders, using place-value strategies and explaining with equations, arrays or area models.

Number and Operations—Fractions (4.NF)

  • 4.NF.1 Use models to explain why a/b equals (n × a)/(n × b) and use this to recognize and make equivalent fractions.
  • 4.NF.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators or benchmarks such as 1/2; record with >, = or <.
  • 4.NF.3 Understand a fraction a/b (a > 1) as several unit fractions 1/b added together.
    • a. See adding and subtracting fractions as joining and separating parts of the same whole.
    • b. Break a fraction into a sum of same-denominator fractions in more than one way and justify with models.
    • c. Add and subtract mixed numbers that have the same denominator.
    • d. Solve word problems adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.
  • 4.NF.4 Extend earlier work on multiplication to multiply fractions by whole numbers.
    • a. Understand a/b as a times 1/b (e.g. 5/4 = 5 × 1/4).
    • b. Multiply a fraction by a whole number using the idea that n × (a/b) = (n × a)/b.
    • c. Solve word problems that multiply a fraction by a whole number.
  • 4.NF.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths and add fractions with denominators 10 and 100.
  • 4.NF.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals and place them on a number line.
  • 4.NF.7 Compare decimals to hundredths by reasoning about size, for the same whole, recording with >, = or <.

Measurement and Data (4.MD)

  • 4.MD.1 Know the relative sizes of units in one system (metric length and mass, pounds and ounces, liters, time) and convert larger units to smaller ones.
  • 4.MD.2 Solve word problems with the four operations about distance, time, liquid volume, mass and money.
    • a. Solve such problems with simple fractions or decimals, including converting larger units to smaller.
    • b. Show measurement quantities with diagrams such as number lines with a scale.
  • 4.MD.3 Use rectangle area and perimeter formulas in real-world and math problems.
  • 4.MD.4 Make line plots of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths and solve fraction problems from them.
  • 4.MD.5 Recognize angles as shapes made by two rays with a shared endpoint and understand how angles are measured.
    • a. Measure an angle by the fraction of a circle it turns through; 1/360 of a turn is a one-degree angle.
    • b. An angle made of n one-degree turns has a measure of n degrees.
  • 4.MD.6 Measure angles in whole degrees with a protractor and sketch angles of a given size.
  • 4.MD.7 Know angle measure is additive and solve problems with it.
    • a. Know the measure of a whole angle is the sum of its non-overlapping parts.
    • b. Find unknown angles in diagrams using addition and subtraction equations.

Geometry (4.G)

  • 4.G.1 Draw and identify points, lines, segments, rays, right/acute/obtuse angles, and perpendicular and parallel lines.
  • 4.G.2 Classify 2-D shapes by parallel or perpendicular lines or angle types, and identify right triangles.
  • 4.G.3 Identify line-symmetric shapes and draw their lines of symmetry.
Standards for Mathematical Practice (apply to every grade)

Standards for Mathematical Practice
