The standards (our summaries)

South Dakota's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Ratios and Proportional Relationships (RP)

  • 6.RP.1 Understand ratios and use ratio language to describe how two quantities relate.
  • 6.RP.2 Understand unit rates for a ratio a:b and use rate language in context.
  • 6.RP.3 Solve real and math problems by reasoning with ratios and rates.
    • 6.RP.3a Make tables of equivalent ratios, find missing values and plot the pairs.
    • 6.RP.3b Solve unit-rate problems such as unit pricing and constant speed.
    • 6.RP.3c Find a percent of an amount as a rate out of 100, and find the whole from a part and its percent.
    • 6.RP.3d Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units.

The Number System (NS)

  • 6.NS.1 Divide fractions by fractions and solve word problems with them.
  • 6.NS.2 Divide multi-digit whole numbers fluently with an algorithm.
  • 6.NS.3 Fluently use all four operations with multi-digit decimals.
  • 6.NS.4 Find the greatest common factor and least common multiple of whole numbers and use the distributive property with common factors.
  • 6.NS.5 Use positive and negative numbers for opposite quantities in real contexts, including what zero means.
  • 6.NS.6 Understand rational numbers as points on number lines and the coordinate plane.
    • 6.NS.6a Know opposite signs mean opposite sides of zero and the opposite of the opposite is the number itself.
    • 6.NS.6b Know signs in ordered pairs show quadrants and pairs differing only in sign are reflections.
    • 6.NS.6c Place integers and rational numbers on number lines and coordinate planes.
  • 6.NS.7 Understand how rational numbers are ordered and what absolute value means.
    • 6.NS.7a Read inequalities as the relative positions of numbers on a number line.
    • 6.NS.7b Write, interpret and explain order statements for rational numbers in real contexts.
    • 6.NS.7c Understand absolute value as distance from zero or size in real situations.
    • 6.NS.7d Tell comparisons of absolute value apart from statements of order.
  • 6.NS.8 Graph points in all four quadrants and find distances using coordinates and absolute value.

Expressions and Equations (EE)

  • 6.EE.1 Write and evaluate numerical expressions with whole-number exponents.
  • 6.EE.2 Write, read and evaluate expressions that use letters as numbers.
    • 6.EE.2a Write expressions showing operations on numbers and variables.
    • 6.EE.2b Name the parts of an expression: sum, term, product, factor, quotient and coefficient.
    • 6.EE.2c Evaluate expressions for given values, including formulas from real problems.
    • 6.EE.2d Use order of operations, with and without parentheses and whole-number exponents.
  • 6.EE.3 Use properties of operations, especially the distributive property, to write equivalent expressions.
  • 6.EE.4 Identify when two expressions are equivalent.
  • 6.EE.5 Use substitution to check whether a value makes an equation or inequality true.
  • 6.EE.6 Use variables for an unknown number or any number in a set.
  • 6.EE.7 Solve x + p = q and px = q for nonnegative rational numbers.
  • 6.EE.8 Write inequalities for constraints and show solutions on number lines.
  • 6.EE.9 Relate dependent and independent variables using equations, graphs and tables.

Geometry (G)

  • 6.G.1 Find areas of triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons by combining or splitting shapes.
  • 6.G.2 Find the volume of rectangular prisms with fraction edges using V = lwh or V = Bh.
  • 6.G.3 Draw polygons on the coordinate plane and find side lengths from coordinates.
  • 6.G.4 Use nets made of rectangles and triangles to find surface area.

Statistics and Probability (SP)

  • 6.SP.1 Recognize a statistical question as one that expects variability in the data.
  • 6.SP.2 Describe a data distribution by its center, spread and overall shape.
  • 6.SP.3 Know measures of center sum up data in one number and measures of variation describe spread.
  • 6.SP.4 Show numerical data on number lines with dot plots, histograms and box plots.
  • 6.SP.5 Summarize numerical data sets in context.
    • 6.SP.5a Report the number of observations.
    • 6.SP.5b Describe the attribute, how it was measured and its units.
    • 6.SP.5c Give measures of center and variability and describe overall patterns and departures.
    • 6.SP.5d Link the choice of measures to the shape of the data and the context.
