High School: Number and Quantity
The Real Number System (N.RN)
The Complex Number System (N.CN)
- N.CN.1 Know the imaginary unit i with i² = −1 and that complex numbers have the form a + bi.
- N.CN.2 Add, subtract and multiply complex numbers using i² = −1 and properties of operations.
- N.CN.3 Find complex conjugates and use them to find moduli and quotients.
- N.CN.7 Solve quadratic equations with real coefficients that have complex solutions.
- N.CN.8 Extend polynomial identities to complex numbers, e.g. factor x² + 4.
- N.CN.9 Know the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra and show it holds for quadratics.
High School: Algebra
Seeing Structure in Expressions (A.SSE)
- A.SSE.1 Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in context.
- A.SSE.2 Use the structure of an expression to rewrite it, e.g. as a difference of squares.
- A.SSE.3 Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression that reveals properties of the quantity.
- c. Use exponent properties to transform exponential expressions.
- A.SSE.4 Derive the formula for the sum of a finite geometric series and use it to solve problems.
Arithmetic with Polynomials and Rational Expressions (A.APR)
- A.APR.1 Understand that polynomials are closed under addition, subtraction and multiplication; add, subtract and multiply them.
- b. Extend to polynomials beyond linear and quadratic.
- A.APR.2 Know the Remainder Theorem: dividing p(x) by x − a leaves p(a), so p(a) = 0 means x − a is a factor.
- A.APR.3 Find zeros of polynomials when suitable factorizations exist and use them to sketch a rough graph.
- A.APR.5 Use the Binomial Theorem to expand (x + y)^n for positive integers n.
- A.APR.6 Rewrite simple rational expressions as quotient plus remainder over divisor, by division or technology.
- A.APR.7 Understand rational expressions form a system like rational numbers; add, subtract, multiply and divide them.
Creating Equations (A.CED)
- A.CED.1 Create one-variable equations and inequalities from linear, quadratic, rational and exponential functions and solve problems.
- c. Extend to more complicated functions, solving with technology if needed.
- A.CED.2 Create equations in two or more variables for relationships and graph them on labeled, scaled axes.
- c. Extend to more complicated functions, graphing with technology if needed.
- A.CED.3 Represent constraints with equations, inequalities or systems and judge whether solutions are viable.
- a. Use more complex contexts, though functions are often linear or quadratic.
- A.CED.4 Rearrange formulas to highlight a quantity of interest.
- d. Use more complex contexts beyond linear, exponential or quadratic functions.
Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities (A.REI)
- A.REI.2 Solve simple rational and radical equations in one variable and show how extraneous solutions arise.
- A.REI.6 Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately, e.g. with graphs.
- b. Extend to systems of three linear equations in three variables, solved algebraically. (+)
- A.REI.11 Explain why intersection x-values solve f(x) = g(x) and find approximate solutions.
High School: Functions
Interpreting Functions (F.IF)
- F.IF.4 Interpret key features of graphs and tables in context and sketch graphs from descriptions.
- F.IF.5 Relate a function's domain to its graph and to the quantities it describes.
- c. Emphasize choosing a function type suited to the data and context.
- F.IF.6 Calculate and interpret average rate of change from a formula or table and estimate it from a graph.
- F.IF.7 Graph functions from symbols and show key features, by hand or with technology.
- c. Graph square root, cube root, piecewise, step and absolute value functions.
- d. Graph polynomials, showing zeros when factorable and end behavior.
- f. Graph exponential and trig functions: intercepts, end behavior, period, midline, amplitude.
- g. Graph rational functions: zeros, asymptotes and end behavior.
- h. Graph logarithmic functions: intercepts and end behavior.
- F.IF.8 Write a function in different but equivalent forms to reveal its properties.
- F.IF.9 Compare properties of two functions represented in different ways.
Building Functions (F.BF)
Linear, Quadratic, and Exponential Models (F.LE)
