The standards (our summaries)

Maryland's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Number and Operation Sense – K.NOS.A: Number names and the counting sequence

  • K.NOS.A.1 Count to 100 by ones and by tens.
  • K.NOS.A.2 Count forward from any given number within 100.
  • K.NOS.A.3 Count backward from any given number within 20.
  • K.NOS.A.4 Write the numerals 0 to 20.
  • K.NOS.A.5 Write a numeral (0 to 20) to show how many objects there are, using 0 when there are none.

Number and Operation Sense – K.NOS.B: Count to tell how many

  • K.NOS.B.6 Count up to 20 objects in any arrangement, matching one number to each object, and know the last number said is the total.
  • K.NOS.B.7 Know that each next number name when counting within 20 means one more.
  • K.NOS.B.8 Subitize: see how many without counting (unfamiliar arrangements up to 6, familiar ones up to 10).

Number and Operation Sense – K.NOS.C: Foundations for place value

  • K.NOS.C.9 Understand ten as a group of ten ones and describe 11 to 19 as ten ones and some more ones.
    • a. Compose and decompose 11 to 19 into ten ones and further ones with objects, drawings or equations.
    • b. Describe such a number as one ten and the right number of ones.
  • K.NOS.C.10 Compare two quantities up to 20 as greater than, less than or equal, using objects, number paths or numerals.

Number and Operation Sense – K.NOS.D: Decompose numbers

  • K.NOS.D.11 Break numbers up to 10 into two parts in more than one way and record each with a drawing or equation.

Algebraic Thinking – K.AT.A: Addition and subtraction problems

  • K.AT.A.1 Represent addition and subtraction within 10 with objects, fingers, drawings, sounds, acting out, words or equations.
  • K.AT.A.2 Solve add to, take from and put together/take apart story problems within 10 and represent them.

Algebraic Thinking – K.AT.B: Repeating patterns

  • K.AT.B.3 Identify, extend and create repeating patterns (e.g. AABAAB, ABCABC) with objects, pictures, sounds or movements.

Geometric Reasoning and Measurement – K.GR.A: Measurable attributes

  • K.GR.A.1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length, height, weight and capacity, using suitable words.
  • K.GR.A.2 Compare two objects directly by a shared attribute and say which has more or less of it (e.g. taller, shorter).
  • K.GR.A.3 Put up to three objects in order by a measurable attribute.

Geometric Reasoning and Measurement – K.GR.B: Two- and three-dimensional shapes

  • K.GR.B.4 Describe where objects are using position words such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind and next to.
  • K.GR.B.5 Name and describe 2-D and 3-D shapes, including in everyday objects, whatever their size or orientation.
  • K.GR.B.6 Tell whether a shape is two-dimensional (flat) or three-dimensional (solid).
  • K.GR.B.7 Analyze and compare 2-D and 3-D shapes by their parts (sides, edges, vertices) and other attributes.
  • K.GR.B.8 Draw 2-D shapes and build models of 3-D shapes.
  • K.GR.B.9 Combine simple shapes to make larger shapes.

Reasoning with Data and Statistics – K.DS.A: Sort objects into categories

  • K.DS.A.1 Sort objects into given categories and count how many are in each (up to 20 per category).
  • K.DS.A.2 Order the categories of a data set by their counts.
