The standards (our summaries)

Kentucky's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Ratios and Proportional Relationships (RP)

  • KY.6.RP.1 Understand ratios and use ratio language to describe how two quantities relate.
  • KY.6.RP.2 Understand the unit rate a/b for a ratio a:b and use rate language.
  • KY.6.RP.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
    • a. Make tables of equivalent ratios, find missing values and graph the pairs.
    • b. Solve unit rate problems such as unit pricing and constant speed.
    • c. Convert measurement units using ratio reasoning.

The Number System (NS)

  • KY.6.NS.1 Divide fractions by fractions and solve word problems.
  • KY.6.NS.2 Divide multi-digit numbers fluently with an algorithm.
    • a. Change rational numbers to decimals using long division.
    • b. Know the decimal of a rational number ends or eventually repeats.
  • KY.6.NS.3 Add, subtract, multiply and divide multi-digit decimals fluently with algorithms.
  • KY.6.NS.4 Use the distributive property to factor a sum of whole numbers with a common factor.
  • KY.6.NS.5 Use positive and negative numbers for opposite quantities and explain what zero means.
  • KY.6.NS.6 Place rational numbers, including negatives, on number lines and the coordinate plane.
    • a. Know opposites lie on either side of zero and zero is its own opposite.
    • b. Place integers and other rational numbers on number lines and grids.
    • c. Know the signs of an ordered pair show its quadrant.
  • KY.6.NS.7 Understand the order and absolute value of rational numbers.
    • a. Read inequalities as the positions of two numbers on a number line.
    • b. Write, interpret and explain the order of rational numbers in real contexts.
    • c. Know absolute value is distance from zero and use it for size in real situations.
    • d. Tell comparisons of absolute value apart from comparisons of order.
  • KY.6.NS.8 Graph points in all four quadrants and find distances between points sharing a coordinate.

Expressions and Equations (EE)

  • KY.6.EE.1 Write and evaluate numerical expressions with whole-number exponents.
  • KY.6.EE.2 Write, read and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
    • a. Write expressions that combine numbers and variables with operations.
    • b. Name the parts of an expression, such as sum, term, factor and coefficient.
    • c. Evaluate expressions for nonnegative rational values using the order of operations.
  • KY.6.EE.3 Use properties of operations to write equivalent expressions.
  • KY.6.EE.4 Know expressions are equivalent when they give the same value for any substitution.
  • KY.6.EE.5 Use substitution to decide which values make an equation or inequality true.
  • KY.6.EE.6 Use variables for unknowns and write expressions for problems.
  • KY.6.EE.7 Solve real problems by writing and solving x + p = q and px = q with nonnegative rationals.
  • KY.6.EE.8 Write inequalities for constraints and graph their infinitely many solutions on a number line.
  • KY.6.EE.9 Use variables for quantities that change together and relate dependent and independent variables.
    • a. Identify which quantity is dependent and which is independent.
    • b. Write an equation giving the dependent quantity in terms of the independent one.
    • c. Analyze the relationship with graphs and tables and link them to the question.

Geometry (G)

  • KY.6.G.1 Find areas of triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons by composing or decomposing them.
  • KY.6.G.2 Find volumes of rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths using formulas.
  • KY.6.G.3 Draw polygons on the coordinate plane from their vertices and find side lengths.
  • KY.6.G.4 Classify solids such as cubes, prisms, pyramids, cones and spheres.

Statistics and Probability (SP)

  • KY.6.SP.0 Use the four-step statistical investigation process.
    • a. Ask statistical questions that expect variability and can be answered with data.
    • b. Plan and carry out the collection of suitable data.
    • c. Analyze data with graphs and numerical measures, comparing individuals and groups.
    • d. Draw sensible conclusions that answer the original question.
  • KY.6.SP.1 Recognize that statistical questions expect variability in the data.
  • KY.6.SP.2 Understand that numerical data have a distribution described by center, spread and shape.
  • KY.6.SP.3 Know measures of center summarize data and measures of variation describe spread.
  • KY.6.SP.4 Show numerical data on number lines with dot plots, histograms and box plots.
  • KY.6.SP.5 Summarize numerical data in context.
    • a. Report how many observations there are.
    • b. Describe what was measured, how and in what units.
    • c. Find the median and/or mean as measures of center.
    • d. Describe the shape and spread with standard terms.
    • e. Link the choice of center and spread measures to the shape of the data.
