The standards (our summaries)

Colorado's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Standard 1: Number and Quantity

  • MA.K.CC.A Count in order, say number names and write numerals.
    • 1. Count aloud to 100 in ones and in tens.
    • 2. Count on from any given number in the counting sequence instead of always starting at 1.
    • 3. Write the numerals 0–20 and use a numeral to show how many objects there are (0 for none).
  • MA.K.CC.B Count objects to tell how many there are.
    • 1. Link counting to quantity: understand how number names match the size of a set.
    • 1.a. Count objects by saying number names in order, matching one name to each object.
    • 1.b. Know the last number said gives the total, whatever the arrangement or counting order.
    • 1.c. Know each next number name stands for a quantity one bigger.
    • 2. Count to answer "how many?" for up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle (10 if scattered), and count out a set of 1–20 objects.
  • MA.K.CC.C Compare two groups or two numbers.
    • 1. Tell whether one group has more, fewer or the same number of objects as another, by matching or counting.
    • 2. Compare two written numerals between 1 and 10.
  • MA.K.NBT.A Work with 11 to 19 as ten ones and some more, the start of place value.
    • 1. Build and break apart 11–19 as ten ones plus extra ones, recording with drawings or equations (e.g. 18 = 10 + 8).

Standard 2: Algebra and Functions

  • MA.K.OA.A See adding as joining and subtracting as taking away, and solve simple problems.
    • 1. Show addition and subtraction in many ways: objects, fingers, drawings, sounds, acting out, words, expressions or equations.
    • 2. Solve addition and subtraction story problems within 10, using objects or drawings to model them.
    • 3. Break numbers up to 10 into pairs in different ways and record each split with a drawing or equation.
    • 4. For any number 1–9, find the partner that makes 10 and record it with a drawing or equation.
    • 5. Add and subtract within 5 fluently.

Standard 3: Data, Statistics, and Probability

  • MA.K.MD.A Describe and compare things by length, weight and other measurable features.
    • 1. Describe measurable attributes such as length or weight, including several attributes of one object.
    • 2. Compare two objects directly by a shared attribute and describe which has more or less of it (e.g. taller/shorter).
  • MA.K.MD.B Sort objects into categories and count each group.
    • 1. Sort objects into given categories, count each category and order the categories by count.

Standard 4: Geometry

  • MA.K.G.A Name and describe shapes and where objects are.
    • 1. Name shapes seen in the environment and describe where things are using words like above, below, beside and behind.
    • 2. Name shapes correctly whatever their size or orientation.
    • 3. Tell flat (two-dimensional) shapes from solid (three-dimensional) shapes.
  • MA.K.G.B Analyze, compare, build and combine shapes.
    • 1. Compare 2-D and 3-D shapes of different sizes and orientations in informal language, noting sides, corners and other features.
    • 2. Model real-world shapes by building them from parts (e.g. sticks and clay) and by drawing them.
    • 3. Put simple shapes together to make larger shapes.
