Shop, Culinary and Art Room Safety Plans

Starter safety plans for hands-on classes: the CTE shop, the culinary lab and the art room. Pick your subject from the template list, then add your machines, recipes and materials.

Never enter students' names, medical details or other personal data. Use initials, “Student A” or roles, and point to where the confidential plans are kept. Everything you type is saved in this browser only and nothing leaves your device.

Starting points – Check every row against your district's policy and the venue's rules, and add what is specific to your students.

CTE shop

Students should pass a safety test for each machine before using it, with guards in place, safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1) on at all times and hearing protection near loud machines. Keep dust collection running and an emergency stop within reach.

Culinary

Choose "Culinary or cooking lesson" from the list. Allergies come first: check allergy information (by initials) before choosing recipes and label ingredients. Then knives, burns and scalds, and food safety.

Art room

Choose "Art room (tools, kiln, solvents)". Cutting tools cause most injuries. Only staff should load and unload the kiln. Choose art materials labeled as non-toxic (the AP seal), ventilate well and keep sprays and solvents to staff use.

Before

  • Check machines, guards, tools and ventilation
  • Check allergies and student needs (by initials)
  • Collect signed safety tests or contracts

Trip day

  • Demonstrate first; safety glasses on
  • Count tools out and in

Afterward

  • Report injuries
  • Note what to change

Keep student information out of it

Write "Student A" or initials and say where the confidential plan is kept ("health plans are with the trip leader"). Names, diagnoses, IEP or 504 details and family phone numbers belong in your district's systems, not on a plan that gets printed and handed to chaperones. What you type here stays in this browser.
