CogAT-style practice tests
Free CogAT-style practice for grades 2–9: verbal, quantitative and nonverbal reasoning puzzles with explanations. Not affiliated with Riverside Insights.
These are practice puzzles, not an IQ test. A real IQ test is standardized and given by a qualified psychologist.
Scores are shown simply as the number right out of the number of questions (for example, 18 out of 25), with an explanation for every question. We never give an IQ number, a percentile or a label, and we never compare you with other people.

The tests
About these tests
CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) is published by Riverside Insights and spans kindergarten to grade 12. Riverside describes three batteries - verbal, quantitative and nonverbal - each with three subtests, such as verbal analogies, verbal classification, number analogies, number puzzles, number series, figure matrices, paper folding and figure classification. Our practice covers most of these kinds of thinking; sentence completion and paper folding are not included yet.
How to use these tests
- Each test picks 20–25 questions at random from a bank of 40 or more, so you can try again and get a different set. There is no time limit unless you choose one. Children aged 7–8 may like an adult to read the questions with them. Use the explanations at the end to learn the rule behind each puzzle.
