How to Read Guitar Tabs
Guitar tab has six lines, one for each string. The top line is the thinnest string, high E, and the bottom line is the thickest, low E – as if you look down at the guitar on your lap. Each number is a fret: 0 means play the string open, 3 means press the 3rd fret. Read from left to right, and play numbers stacked in one column together.
Works in the UK and the US. This version uses US music words (measure, quarter note, eighth note, staff); the UK version uses bar, crotchet, quaver and stave. · UK version of this page

Key facts
- Tab lines, top to bottom: e B G D A E (1st string to 6th string).
- Standard tuning, 6th to 1st string: E2, A2, D3, G3, B3, E4.
- A number is a fret, not a finger. One fret = one half step. 0 = open string; the 12th fret is an octave above the open string.
- Numbers in one column are played together (a chord); numbers in a row are played one after another.
- Common symbols: h hammer-on, p pull-off, / and \ slides, b bend, ~ vibrato, x muted note, PM palm mute.
- Most tab does not show rhythm. Listen to the music, or read the rhythm from the notation printed above the tab.

How do you read guitar tabs?
Read guitar tab like a picture of the fretboard: six lines for the six strings, high E on top and low E at the bottom. Each number tells you which fret to press on that line’s string. Play the numbers from left to right.
- Find the string: the line the number sits on (top e, then B, G, D, A, E).
- Find the fret: the number. 0 is open; 2 is the 2nd fret.
- Pick that string.
- Move right to the next number. Numbers lined up in one column are a chord: strum them together.
- Get the rhythm from a recording, or from the staff above the tab if there is one.
In Frère Jacques above, G|-0-2- means “open G string, then G string at the 2nd fret”, and B|-0- means “open B string”.
Which line is which string in guitar tab?
From top to bottom the lines are high E, B, G, D, A and low E. The top line is the 1st string (E4), the thinnest; the bottom line is the 6th string (E2), the thickest. High E is often written as a small e.
| Tab line | String | Open note | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st line from the top (e) | 1st string (high E) | E4 | 329.63 Hz |
| 2nd line from the top (B) | 2nd string (B) | B3 | 246.94 Hz |
| 3rd line from the top (G) | 3rd string (G) | G3 | 196.00 Hz |
| 4th line from the top (D) | 4th string (D) | D3 | 146.83 Hz |
| 5th line from the top (A) | 5th string (A) | A2 | 110.00 Hz |
| 6th line from the top (E) | 6th string (low E) | E2 | 82.41 Hz |
It feels upside down at first, because the lowest-sounding string is the bottom line. Think of it as looking down at the strings from above: the string nearest the floor is the top line.
What do the numbers mean in guitar tab?
Each number is the fret to press on that string. 0 is the open string, 1 is the first fret (nearest the tuning pegs), and each fret raises the note by one half step. Numbers above 12 are high up the neck.
| String | Open | Fret 1 | Fret 2 | Fret 3 | Fret 4 | Fret 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st (high E) | E4 | F4 | F♯4/G♭4 | G4 | G♯4/A♭4 | A4 |
| 2nd (B) | B3 | C4 | C♯4/D♭4 | D4 | D♯4/E♭4 | E4 |
| 3rd (G) | G3 | G♯3/A♭3 | A3 | A♯3/B♭3 | B3 | C4 |
| 4th (D) | D3 | D♯3/E♭3 | E3 | F3 | F♯3/G♭3 | G3 |
| 5th (A) | A2 | A♯2/B♭2 | B2 | C3 | C♯3/D♭3 | D3 |
| 6th (low E) | E2 | F2 | F♯2/G♭2 | G2 | G♯2/A♭2 | A2 |
So 3 on the bottom line is G2, and 1 on the B line is C4 (middle C). Tab never says which finger to use; a good habit is one finger per fret: index for fret 1, middle for 2, ring for 3, little finger for 4. See the full guitar notes chart.

How do you read chords in guitar tab?
When numbers are stacked in one column, play them together. An open G chord is 3-0-0-0-2-3 from the top line down; a C chord is 0-1-0-2-3 with the bottom line (low E) left out.
Chord charts and tab show the same thing in two ways. A chord chart lists frets from low E to high E (G is 3 2 0 0 0 3); tab reads from the top line down, high E first.
| Chord | Chord chart (low E → high E) | Tab column (top line → bottom) |
|---|---|---|
| G | 3 2 0 0 0 3 | 3-0-0-0-2-3 |
| C | x 3 2 0 1 0 | 0-1-0-2-3-x |
| D | x x 0 2 3 2 | 2-3-2-0-x-x |
| Em | 0 2 2 0 0 0 | 0-0-0-2-2-0 |
| Am | x 0 2 2 1 0 | 0-1-2-2-0-x |
- 3 2 0 0 0 3
- x 3 2 0 1 0
- x x 0 2 3 2
- 0 2 2 0 0 0
- x 0 2 2 1 0
Chord boxes show the six strings upright, low E on the left. Numbers in the dots are fingers (1 index, 2 middle, 3 ring, 4 little); o = open string, × = do not play. The numbers under each box are the frets from low E to high E.
What do h, p, / and b mean in guitar tab?
h is a hammer-on, p is a pull-off, / (or s) is a slide up and \ a slide down, and b is a bend: 7b9 means bend fret 7 until it sounds like fret 9. Each one changes the note without picking again.

In words: 3rd string (G), open; 3rd string (G), hammer-on to fret 2; 2nd string (B), open; 2nd string (B), hammer-on to fret 1; 2nd string (B), fret 3; 2nd string (B), pull-off to fret 1; 2nd string (B), pull-off to open; 3rd string (G), fret 2; 1st string (high E), fret 3; 1st string (high E), slide up to fret 5; 1st string (high E), slide down to fret 3; 1st string (high E), open.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 0 | Open string: pluck it with no finger on a fret |
| 3 | Press the string just behind the 3rd fret, then pluck |
| Numbers in one column | Play them together (a chord or double stop) |
| h (0h2) | Hammer-on: pluck the first note, then hammer a finger onto the higher fret without plucking again |
| p (2p0) | Pull-off: pluck the higher note, then pull the finger off sideways so the lower note sounds |
| / or s (2/4) | Slide up: pluck, then keep pressing as you slide to the higher fret |
| \ (4\2) | Slide down to the lower fret |
| x | Muted (dead) note: touch the string without pressing it down, then pluck |
| ~ | Vibrato: wobble the pitch by rocking or pushing the finger |
| b (5b7) | Bend: push the string sideways until fret 5 sounds like fret 7 |
| | | Bar line (end of a measure) |
| PM (under the tab) | Palm mute: rest the side of the picking hand on the strings by the bridge |
| r (7b9r7) | Release: let a bent string come back down |
| <12> | Natural harmonic: touch the string lightly right over the fret, then pick |
Guitar tabs for beginners: what to read first
- Open strings (the first tab above): learn which line is which.
- One-string tunes, then two-string tunes, such as Ode to Joy and Mary Had a Little Lamb.
- Simple riffs with power chords, like the one below.
- Chords in tab, then hammer-ons and slides.
