What it does
Each letter page lists common words beginning with that letter, from three to ten letters long, with a section for each length. A summary at the top gives the total count, the length with the most words, and the highest-scoring word. For instance, the Q page lists 197 words, with eight-letter words the largest group, while the A page lists 2,005. Each length section shows a selection of up to 60 high-frequency words, with a point value after each.
There are pages for every letter except X. The Classfern button opens the A page; from there, a row of letters at the bottom links to all the others. When you need words with a particular start that also use specific letters, each page points you to the unscrambler’s Starts with option or the word finder.

How to use it
- Click the button below to open the A page in a new tab.
- Scroll to the alphabet row at the bottom and choose your letter.
- Read the summary, then jump to the length section you need, from three-letter to ten-letter words.
- For narrower searches, such as five-letter words starting with S that contain a T, use the unscrambler’s Starts with setting or the word finder.
More tips
- For digraphs and blends (sh, ch, st, bl), open the first letter’s page and scan for words that start with both letters.
- Letters such as Q, Y and Z have short lists, perfect for quick whole-class challenges.
Ideas for the classroom and homeschool
- Grades K–1Pick the letter of the week, open its page, and choose three- and four-letter words for a sound wall. Students draw a picture next to each word.
- Grades K–2Sort beginning sounds: from the S page, select words starting with s, sh and st, and have students group them by the first sound they hear.
- Grades 3–5Write alliterative tongue twisters or poems: each student picks a letter page and collects nouns, verbs and adjectives starting with it.
- Grades 6–8Compare letter pages: which letters have the most common words and which the fewest? Students predict, check the totals, and discuss why.
Questions
Why does the button go to the A page?
There isn’t a single index page, so Classfern links to A. Every letter page links to all the other letters at the bottom.
Is there a page for X?
No. Use the word finder or the unscrambler’s Starts with option for X words.
Does each page list every word?
Each length section shows a selection of up to 60 high-frequency words, so the biggest letters are trimmed.

The lists come from a general word-game dictionary and include a few words you may not want young children to see. Preview a page before projecting it.
