What it does
This is the decoding side of the A1Z26 letter-number code. It opens on the Numbers to letters tab: paste something like 19-5-5 25-15-21 and the result reads SEE YOU. Numbers within a word can be split by hyphens, commas, dots or spaces, with a slash or gap marking a new word. A tab at the top switches back to encoding if you want to write a reply.
If the output looks like gibberish, try ticking the box that starts counting at zero, since some puzzles treat A as 0. Values with no matching letter appear as a question mark, and a list below the answer helps you track down typing slips. The page also gives sensible next steps when a message is not plain A1Z26: values from 65 up to 122 usually point to ASCII, and number pairs may belong to a book cipher, which needs the right book.

How to use it
- Check you are on the Numbers to letters tab.
- Paste or type the numbers, keeping words apart with a slash or a space gap.
- Read the letters in the result box.
- Nonsense? Tick the count-from-zero option and look again.
- Look under the result for any question marks, which flag numbers that could not be letters.

More tips
- Ask learners to decode a few letters by hand before checking; it builds quick recall of alphabet positions.
Ideas for the classroom and homeschool
- Grades K–2Hide a class reward word as numbers on the board; children use an alphabet strip, then the tool to confirm.
- Grades 3–5Arithmetic code-break: each number is written as a sum or product, so students calculate first and decode second.
- Grades 3–5Spelling practice: give this week's words in number form and let students decode and write them out.
- Grades 6–8Investigate why some numbers in a puzzle exceed 26 and research which other code they might come from.
Questions
How do numbers become letters?
Every value between 1 and 26 maps to the letter in that spot of the alphabet, so 1 is A and 26 is Z.
What does 3-1-20 say?
CAT: 3 is C, 1 is A and 20 is T.
What does a question mark in the answer mean?
No letter matches that value, for instance 27 or more. You will find it listed so you can look again.
What if the puzzle counts from zero?
Tick the zero option; then A counts as 0 and Z as 25.
