What it does
Lorem ipsum is placeholder text that resembles real writing, with mixed word lengths and ordinary punctuation, yet can’t be read, which keeps everyone’s attention on the layout. It comes from a passage in Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC, cut up and altered until it was no longer proper Latin. The generator assembles new sentences using vocabulary drawn from that well-known passage.
Choose a number (1 to 5,000) and a unit: paragraphs, sentences or words. Output comes as plain text, separated by blank lines, or as HTML with every paragraph inside <p> tags, ready for a web page. A checkbox controls whether the text starts with the familiar “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” line, and a count of paragraphs, words and characters is shown below the output.
How to use it
- Open the generator in a new tab.
- Type the amount you want in the “How many” field.
- Select Paragraphs, Sentences or Words, then choose Plain text or HTML.
- Keep the classic opening checked, or uncheck it so each block begins at a random spot, which is better when you are filling several boxes.
- Click Generate, then Copy, or click in the output box to select it all.
More tips
- Use Words for an exact length, since generated paragraphs vary between four and seven sentences.
- Before printing or publishing, search the file for “lorem” to make sure no placeholder text slipped through.

- Grades 3–5While students design a class newsletter, let them drop lorem ipsum into the article boxes so they can plan headlines, pictures and columns first, then write the real stories.

Questions
Does lorem ipsum translate to anything?
Not really. It’s scrambled Latin. “Lorem” is what remains of “dolorem” (pain) after the original was cut, and the shuffled order removes the meaning.
Is it free to use?
Yes. Cicero wrote the source more than two thousand years ago, and you can use the generated text any way you want.
How can I get the output with HTML tags?
Set Format to the HTML option and click Generate; each paragraph arrives wrapped in <p> and </p>.
Can I use it to test a Spanish-language layout?
Only partly. It stays Latin-like, so paste in a real Spanish sample if you need to check accents or long words.
