The tests
About these tests
Playful maths practice for children in Reception (age 4–5), built around the two early learning goals for mathematics in the EYFS statutory framework, Number and Numerical Patterns, plus a set on shapes and patterns.
Near the end of Reception, teachers record whether each child is at the expected level for each early learning goal (the EYFS profile). These questions are not part of that or of any other assessment, including the reception baseline assessment, which children do not need to prepare for: they are simply something to share with an adult.
Every question can be read aloud by your device, and children see straight away whether they are right, with a short explanation.
Key facts
- The early learning goal for Number says children at the expected level will have a deep understanding of numbers to 10, including the composition of each number; subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5; and automatically recall number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts. - The early learning goal for Numerical Patterns says children at the expected level will verbally count beyond 20; compare quantities up to 10, recognising when one quantity is greater than, less than or the same as another; and explore and represent patterns within numbers up to 10, including evens and odds, double facts and how quantities can be distributed equally. - The mathematics educational programme says children should have rich opportunities to develop spatial reasoning skills across all areas of mathematics, including shape, space and measures. - The EYFS profile is completed in the final term of the year in which the child turns five, and no later than 30 June. Each child is assessed against the early learning goals as meeting the expected level or not yet reaching it (emerging). - These sets are not practice for the reception baseline assessment (RBA). The RBA takes place within the first 6 weeks of starting Reception, and the government's guide for parents says: "You do not need to do anything to prepare your child for the assessment." Children cannot pass or fail it, and the data from it, including numerical scores, is not shared with parents. How to use these tests
- Sit with your child and press Play, or read the question aloud yourself.
- Use real things to help: fingers, pasta pieces, toy cars or an egg box as a ten frame.
- Little and often is best: one set of 15 questions is plenty for one go.
How we wrote these tests
Every question is written by Classfern. The answers are worked out by one computer program and checked again by a second, separate program, and every set is reviewed by an independent AI checker that did not write it.
