CAT4-style practice tests
Free CAT4-style practice for ages 7–14: verbal, quantitative, non-verbal and spatial puzzles with explanations. Not affiliated with GL Assessment.
These are practice puzzles, not an IQ test. A real IQ test is standardised and given by a qualified psychologist.
Scores are shown simply as the number right out of the number of questions (for example, 18 out of 25), with an explanation for every question. We never give an IQ number, a percentile or a label, and we never compare you with other people.

The tests
About these tests
CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test, fourth edition) is published by GL Assessment and used by many schools. GL Assessment describes four batteries: verbal (verbal classification and verbal analogies), quantitative (number analogies and number series), non-verbal (figure classification and figure matrices) and spatial (figure analysis with folded and punched paper, and figure recognition). Our practice copies the kinds of thinking, not the questions, and our spatial puzzles use turns and reflections instead of paper folding; there are no hidden-figure (figure recognition) puzzles.
How to use these tests
- Each test picks 20–25 questions at random from a bank of 40 or more, so you can try again and get a different set. There is no time limit unless you choose one. Children aged 7–8 may like an adult to read the questions with them. Use the explanations at the end to learn the rule behind each puzzle.
