The tests
About these tests
Free everyday maths practice for adults in the UK: budgeting and pay, sale prices and VAT, timetables and shift times, measures for DIY and cooking, and reading tables and charts. Useful for brushing up before a course, a job test or a Functional Skills assessment.
Every answer is worked out by a script and checked again by a second, independent script. VAT questions use the current UK rates from GOV.UK.
Key facts
- The standard rate of VAT in the UK is 20% (most goods and services). The reduced rate of 5% applies to some goods and services, for example children’s car seats and home energy. Zero-rated goods include most food and children’s clothes. Source: GOV.UK – VAT rates
- The National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 an hour from 1 April 2026, and the rates change on 1 April every year. Every adult hourly pay rate in these tests is above it. Source: GOV.UK – National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage rates
- Calculating discounts and simple interest, converting between units and using scales on maps are all part of the Level 1 Functional Skills maths content. Source: GOV.UK – Functional Skills subject content: mathematics
