Level 4 (like Grade 4) · Unit 18 of 24

Transposing

Moving music higher or lower – into another clef, another key, or for an instrument that reads differently.

By the end you will be able to:

Learn

By an octave

The simplest move keeps the same letter names an octave higher or lower. To move a treble clef tune down an octave into the bass clef, remember middle C: one ledger line below the treble staff, one above the bass staff.

CDECCDEC
The same tune, an octave lower in the bass clef.

By an interval

To move a tune up a major 2nd, move every note up a major 2nd – and change the key signature too. A tune in C major moved up a major 2nd is in D major (two sharps). The key signature takes care of the sharps and flats, so the letters simply move up one step.

Transposing instruments

Some instruments read notes that are different from the sounds they make. A clarinet or trumpet in B♭ sounds a major 2nd lower than written, so its music is written a major 2nd higher. An alto saxophone (in E♭) sounds a major 6th lower than written. A soprano recorder sounds an octave higher than written.

Your turn

Watch and listen, then practice with new questions every time – reading questions, and writing tasks you answer on the staff. Take the check when you are ready: 80% passes the unit.
