Learn
Up to five sharps and flats
The pattern carries on: E major has four sharps (F♯ C♯ G♯ D♯) and B major five. A♭ major has four flats (B♭ E♭ A♭ D♭) and D♭ major five. Their relative minors are C♯, G♯, F and B♭ minor. Keep using the rules: the key is a half step above the last sharp, or the second-to-last flat.
2/2: cut time
2/2 has two half note beats in a measure – the same length as 4/4, but felt in two. It is sometimes shown as a C with a line through it (cut common time).
9/8 and 12/8
These are compound times: three or four dotted quarter note beats in a measure, each beat split into three eighth notes.
Your turn
Watch and listen, then practice with new questions every time – reading questions, and writing tasks you answer on the staff. Take the check when you are ready: 80% passes the unit.
