Metronome and Backing Tracks

A clear click for practice, seven drum beats for the whole class, and jam tracks: pick a key and a chord progression and play or improvise over drums, bass and chords.

All sounds are made in your browser. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent – only your settings are remembered on this device.

How it works

Choose a style, set the tempo (or tap it in) and press Start. The count-in plays one or two bars of clicks first so everyone comes in together. The circles show each beat, with beat 1 in yellow. Press the space bar to start and stop.

Click only is a metronome: choose the beats in a bar and add quieter in-between clicks for quavers, triplets or semiquavers.

Jam tracks

Tick Jam track, choose a key and a progression, and the drums are joined by a bass line and chords. The big display shows the chord now and the chord coming next, as chord names, Roman numerals or both. Type your own progression with Roman numerals (I V vi IV) or chord names (C G Am F). Turn the drums, bass or chords off to let a group of pupils play that part themselves.

Ideas for lessons

  • Keep a steady pulse: clap or play on beat 1 only, then on beats 2 and 4.
  • Improvise over the 12-bar blues in C using the notes C, E♭, F, G and B♭.
  • Compare styles: what changes between rock, swing and reggae? (Listen for where the snare drum lands.)
  • Play the chords of a song you know on ukuleles, keyboards or chime bars while the bass and drums keep time.

Good to know

The sounds are made by your browser, so they are light and quick to load but they are not studio recordings. On phones and tablets the sound starts after you press Start (browsers do not allow sound before you tap). If you hear nothing, check the device is not on silent.

Questions teachers ask

Is the timing accurate?

Yes. The beats are booked ahead on the browser's own audio clock, so the tempo stays steady even when the page is busy. Very old or very slow devices may still stutter now and then.

Can I use my own chord progression?

Yes. Type Roman numerals such as I IV V or ii7 V7 Imaj7, or chord names such as C G Am F. Anything the tool does not understand is listed so you can fix it.

Does it record anything?

No. The page only plays sounds. It does not use the microphone and nothing is saved except your settings, in this browser.

Why can't I hear anything on my phone?

Phones block sound until you tap a button, and many mute web pages when the side switch is set to silent. Press Start again, turn the volume up and check the silent switch.
