Learn
Repeat signs
A thick and a thin line with two dots (:‖) means go back and play again. Go back to the facing sign (‖:), or to the very start if there is none. Play the repeat once, then carry on.
1st- and 2nd-time bars
Brackets marked 1. and 2. over the end of a repeated section are 1st- and 2nd-time bars. The first time, play the 1. bar and repeat. The second time, skip it and play the 2. bar instead.
D.C., D.S., Fine and Coda
- D.C. (da capo) means go back to the beginning.
- D.S. (dal segno) means go back to the sign 𝄋.
- Fine means the end – stop there after going back.
- Coda means the tail: at “To Coda ⊕” (after going back), jump to the Coda at the end.
So “D.C. al Fine” means go back to the start and finish at Fine. After a D.C. or D.S., repeats are usually not played a second time.
Your turn
Watch and listen, then practise with new questions every time – reading questions, and writing tasks you answer on the stave. Take the check when you are ready: 80% passes the unit.
