How a T Level works
A 2-year level 3 course for 16 to 19 year olds, broadly equal to 3 A levels. Students take a technical qualification (core + an occupational specialism) and do an industry placement.
- Core component: Externally set written exams plus an employer-set project (ESP). Graded A* to E.
- Occupational specialism: Practical, project-style assessment for one job role (some T Levels allow more). Graded pass, merit or distinction.
- Industry placement: At least 315 hours (about 45 days) with an employer.
- Classroom hours: 1,100 to 1,300 over 2 years
- Size: broadly equivalent to 3 A levels
- Grades: Core: A* to E
- English maths: Students without GCSE grade 4 keep working towards English and maths, but it is no longer needed to pass the T Level.
- Count note: DfE says 21 T Levels are available (Jan 2026); tlevels.gov.uk lists 20 open subjects (Finance has last enrolments Sept 2026) plus 2 coming in Sept 2028.
