The tests
About these tests
Free MTC-style practice for Year 4. Each of the five practice tests has 25 times table questions chosen the way the official framework describes: only the 2 to 12 tables, more questions from the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 tables, and never both 3 × 8 and 8 × 3 in the same test. There is an optional 6-second timer, and an untimed practice that covers all 121 facts. These are practice tests written by Classfern, not official STA material.
Key facts
- The multiplication tables check (MTC) is statutory from the 2021/2022 academic year. All eligible Year 4 pupils registered at maintained schools, special schools or academies (including free schools) in England are required to take it. Source: GOV.UK (MTC assessment framework, section 2)
- Its purpose is to determine whether Year 4 pupils can fluently recall their multiplication tables. It only assesses instant recall of multiplication facts (there are no division questions). Source: GOV.UK (MTC assessment framework, sections 2–3)
- It is an on-screen check of 25 times table questions. Pupils have 6 seconds to answer each question, with a 3-second pause before the next one. Source: GOV.UK (MTC assessment framework, sections 4 and 5.1)
- Questions are selected from the 121 items that make up the 2 to 12 multiplication tables. The 1 times table is not included in the check. Source: GOV.UK (MTC assessment framework, section 5.2)
- There is an emphasis on the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 multiplication tables (2 to 4 questions each per check), with 1 to 3 from the 3, 4, 5 and 11 tables and 0 to 2 from the 2 and 10 tables. Source: GOV.UK (MTC assessment framework, section 5.2 and table 1)
- A question and its reversal (for example 3 × 8 and 8 × 3) do not appear in the same check. Source: GOV.UK (MTC assessment framework, section 5.2.2)
- Pupils answer 3 practice questions before the check. On average it should take no longer than 5 minutes. There is no pass mark, and the teacher shares the child's score with parents. Source: GOV.UK
- In the 2026 to 2027 school year, schools must give the check within the 2-week period from Monday 7 June 2027. Source: GOV.UK
How we wrote these tests
Each practice test is built by a script to the published limits: 25 questions, both numbers from 2 to 12, per-table counts within table 1 of the framework (counted on the first number, as footnote 5 explains, with the second number kept within ±1 of those limits), 3 to 7 questions from the 2, 5 and 10 tables, no question and its reversal together, and no two tests sharing more than 7 questions.
