Repeats and form
Repeat signs, 1st- and 2nd-time measures, D.C., D.S., Fine and Coda – the road signs of music.
By the end you will be able to:
- follow repeat signs
- play 1st- and 2nd-time measures in the right order
- follow D.C., D.S., Fine and Coda
Learn
Repeat signs
A thick and a thin line with two dots (:‖) means go back and play again. Go back to the facing sign (‖:), or to the very start if there is none. Play the repeat once, then carry on.
1st and 2nd endings
Brackets marked 1. and 2. over the end of a repeated section are 1st and 2nd endings. The first time, play the 1. ending and repeat. The second time, skip it and play the 2. ending instead.
D.C., D.S., Fine and Coda
- D.C. (da capo) means go back to the beginning.
- D.S. (dal segno) means go back to the sign 𝄋.
- Fine means the end – stop there after going back.
- Coda means the tail: at “To Coda ⊕” (after going back), jump to the Coda at the end.
So “D.C. al Fine” means go back to the start and finish at Fine. After a D.C. or D.S., repeats are usually not played a second time.
Your turn
Watch and listen, then practice with new questions every time – reading questions, and writing tasks you answer on the staff. Take the check when you are ready: 80% passes the unit.
