Not legal or immigration advice. This is a plain-English summary for Classfern’s Exchange Finder pages. Rules change often. Teachers and schools must check the official pages linked below, and talk to their employer, the programme sponsor or an immigration adviser before making plans. Classfern does not arrange jobs, visas or checks.
The short answer
- A teacher cannot simply swap jobs between the US and the UK on a tourist/visitor visa. Teaching pupils as a member of staff is work, and work needs the right visa or an approved exchange scheme.
- What is realistic for most teachers:
- a short visit / job-shadow (watching lessons, meeting staff, sharing practice, giving the odd talk – not teaching as staff),
- a virtual exchange or class twinning (teacher-to-teacher online, no travel), or
- a formal programme (Fulbright, J-1 Teacher, British Council schemes) that handles the visa side.
- A “proper” one-month swap where each teacher takes the other’s classes is very hard to do legally under current rules (see the end of this page).
United States side (for teachers coming to the US)
J-1 Exchange Visitor – Teacher category
- Run by the US Department of State. You must go through a designated J-1 sponsor (find one with the “Find a Program Sponsor” search on j1visa.state.gov).
- Main rules (j1visa.state.gov/programs/teacher, checked 20 Oct 2026):
- at least 24 months of teaching (or related) experience;
- qualified to teach in your home country, with a degree equal to a US bachelor’s in education or your subject;
- currently teaching when you apply (with a narrow exception for recent advanced-degree graduates);
- good English (checked by the sponsor), good character, and you must meet the standards of the US state where you teach;
- full-time teaching as teacher of record at an accredited school;
- base length 3 years, with possible 1- or 2-year extensions;
- yearly cultural-exchange activities, and you return home to share what you learned.
- This is not a one-month swap. It is a full-time job placement through a sponsor.
- States add their own rules. For example, South Carolina requires sponsors to hold a state “Letter of No Objection”, sign contracts guaranteeing full-time teaching at equal pay, and not charge teachers placement fees (SC Department of Education page, checked 20 Oct 2026).
Fulbright Teacher Exchanges (US Department of State, run with IREX)
The FY2027 funding notice lists these programmes:
- Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching (DAI) – US K-12 teachers go abroad for 3–6 months for an inquiry project at a university, plus school visits. The UK version places US teachers at Queen’s University Belfast, UCL, University of Glasgow or University of Strathclyde.
- DAI for International Teachers – teachers from other countries spend one semester in the US.
- Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) – six weeks at a US university for international teachers.
- Teachers for Global Classrooms and Leaders for Global Schools – short trips (about 10–15 days) for US educators to set host countries (the UK is not currently one of them).
- The US–UK Fulbright Commission page for DAI to the UK said “applications are closed” when checked; join their mailing list for the next round.
US school checks and licensing (for anyone working in a US school)
- Each state licenses teachers. A UK teacher would normally need a state licence or a special exchange/visiting permit, arranged with the state education department and the sponsor.
- Fingerprint-based state and FBI background checks are the norm for school staff; details vary by state and district.
- Visitors who are not employed may still be asked for a check or to be supervised – this is the host school’s decision.
United Kingdom side (for teachers coming to the UK)
Government Authorised Exchange (GAE) – Temporary Work visa
The Immigration Rules list the approved schemes (Appendix Government Authorised Exchange schemes, updated 8 Oct 2026). Those that can cover school teaching or education exchanges:
| Scheme | Sponsor | Max length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foreign Language Assistants Programme | British Council | 12 months | Language assistants in UK schools |
| China–UK Mandarin teachers scheme | Centre for Language Education and Cooperation | 24 months | Mandarin teachers only |
| Erasmus+ | IRARA Services Ltd | 12 months | “Teaching placements and training assignments” |
| US–UK Education Commission (Fulbright) | US–UK Fulbright Commission | 24 months | Fulbright award holders |
There is no general “teacher exchange” GAE scheme for any school to use. A US teacher can only use GAE if they are accepted onto one of these schemes.
The UK has agreed to rejoin Erasmus+ from 2027 (announced December 2025), which may open more staff exchange routes with EU countries – not the US.
Standard Visitor – what a US teacher may and may not do
From Appendix Visitor: Permitted Activities (updated 8 Oct 2026):
- May: “take part in educational exchanges or visits with a state funded school or academy or independent school” (PA 2(b)); attend meetings, conferences, workshops (PA 4(a)); give a one-off or short series of talks that are not commercial events (PA 4(b)); academics may take part in formal exchanges with UK counterparts (PA 11.1).
- May not: take a teaching post, cover classes, be paid by the UK school, or do work that fills a role. Visitors must not work.
- In plain words: observing lessons, team-planning, sharing practice, and the occasional talk or demo lesson alongside the class teacher = usually fine as a visitor. Teaching timetabled classes as staff = not allowed.
- If unsure, ask UK Visas and Immigration or an adviser – border officers decide on the day.
QTS / recognition
- The USA is on the list of countries whose teaching qualifications can support an application for Qualified Teacher Status in England (gov.uk, updated 13 Oct 2026). Requirements include a degree, full professional status in the US, teacher training of at least one year, a year of post-qualification teaching and English at B2.
- QTS is about being employed as a teacher. It is not needed for a short visit.
- Scotland (GTC Scotland), Wales (EWC) and Northern Ireland (GTCNI) have their own registration rules.
Safeguarding checks in UK schools (DBS)
- Keeping children safe in education 2026 (in force 1 Sept 2026) sets the rules for schools in England.
- Staff need an enhanced DBS check (with barred list check if in regulated activity). People who have lived abroad also need overseas criminal record checks or certificates of good conduct (e.g. a US FBI Identity History Summary).
- Visitors without unsupervised contact with children are unlikely to need a DBS check; the school will supervise them and follow its visitor policy.
- Note: from 1 Sept 2026 the “supervised volunteer” exemption was removed by the Crime and Policing Act 2026 – people in regular unsupervised-style roles need checks. A visitor teaching regularly could fall into this; schools decide.
Other countries (brief)
- Canada: Teacher exchanges are run by provinces and teacher associations. Example: the Alberta Teachers’ Association runs short in-person exchanges (1–2 weeks each way), free 4–6-week virtual “e-exchanges”, and a year-long swap (Australia, currently paused). Teachers stay employed by their home district.
- Australia: The Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408) has a staff exchange stream for reciprocal position swaps under a written exchange agreement (up to 2 years). Teachers also need registration with the state teacher regulator (e.g. NESA, VIT). Check with the Department of Home Affairs.
- New Zealand: Teachers need Teaching Council registration or a Limited Authority to Teach, plus the right work visa.
- Ireland: Teachers in recognised schools must register with the Teaching Council. UK and Irish citizens can work in each other’s country under the Common Travel Area; US citizens need an employment permit.
What a one-month US–UK swap would realistically need
| Option | Realistic? | What’s needed |
|---|---|---|
| Each teacher takes the other’s classes for a month | Very hard | A work-permitting route for both (J-1 Teacher is 3 years full-time, not one month; no general UK GAE scheme), state licence / QTS-level recognition, full employment checks in both countries, both employers’ agreement on pay and insurance. |
| Two-week visits each way: observing, co-planning, a few talks or demo lessons alongside the class teacher | Yes, often | Visitor status (no paid work, no covering classes), host school invitation letter, school’s visitor/safeguarding policy, head teacher approval, own travel insurance, home employer leave. |
| Formal programme (Fulbright DAI 3–6 months, J-1, British Council) | Yes, if selected | Apply to the programme; it handles the visa and placement. |
| Virtual exchange / class twinning | Easiest | Both schools’ approval, school-approved video tools, follow each school’s online-safety policy, no pupil personal data on Classfern. |
Our advice on the Finder: match teachers for visits and virtual exchanges, and point anyone wanting a job swap to the official programmes above.
