How does the classroom noise meter work, and is anything recorded?
Press Start listening and allow the microphone. The meter only measures how loud the room is, on this device; nothing is recorded, saved or sent. Set the Too loud above level to suit your class.
Step by step
- Open the noise meter.
- Press Start listening and choose Allow when the browser asks for the microphone.
- Drag Too loud above to set the limit. The display moves from “Nice and calm” to “Too loud!”.
- Tick Soft beep when too loud if you want a sound cue (at most one beep every four seconds).
- Go full screen to show it on the board.

It can’t use my microphone
Your browser asks for permission the first time. If you pressed Block, click the padlock or settings icon at the left of the address bar, set Microphone to Allow and reload the page. Also check your device’s privacy settings allow your browser to use the microphone, and close other apps (such as Teams or Zoom) that might be using it.
It always says too loud (or never)
Every microphone is different. Move the Too loud above slider until normal working noise sits in the calm or middle zone. Laptop microphones near a fan or speaker read high.
Is the class being recorded?
No. The tool reads only the loudness level, many times a second, and throws it away. No sound is stored or sent anywhere.
